Basically I have a nine year old beagle who I love with every part of my being.i have anxiety, depression and OCD and just lately I've starting doubting the way I relate to him,I worry I don't talk to him enough I don't want him to feel I don't care if I'm not always talking to him.without anybody being nasty can people advise me how much to talk to him or whether I'm doing okay thanks

Your dog is ok, do not worry. You would not have to talk to him at all and he still be ok. Just give him a cuddle, do both of you good, and try not to worry.

Thank you so much for replying to me,it's hard when you have mental health problems to believe in yourself,I've always been very sensitive and I love animals .apart from the above you wouldn't know as I look and act quite normal.thanks for the vote of confidence.do you have pets?

Sorry to hear you are still having issues with this.
I sometimes think our dogs understand us better than we understand ourselves. They pick up on a lot more than we think. Relax - your dog knows that you love him.

I don't talk to my dogs a lot, they are happy sleeping in their beds most of the day.
They get their cuddles when they want them, and they get their 3 walks a day and their food, plus their titbits and they are happy.

My vet says I talk to ours too much, personally I would not let anyone even my vet worry me as long as my dogs are happy I just bumble along in my own way. There is no ideal way with a dog IMO they are all individuals like we are so each relationship is very different to the last. Our Elsie loves chatting as does our Betty but our late Duncan preferred not to be chatted to too much I think it confused him.

I wouldn't think a beagle is an easy choice for you. They do have an alarming habit of following scents and not being good at recall.

How is your dog with other people and dogs? Why not ask someone who knows you both if they think there's a problem?

I know somebody who had a "socially inadequate" large dog who got her into trouble with his aggression towards other dogs. After a number of years of this everything changed when her psychiatrist changed HER medication. Amazing!
