The opposite, it's being left open ended because they needed a way around the care situation without eliminating the possibility of an eventual return.

Apparently she left him at age of 15 (which would have been in 2010). Apparently Ken didn't notice when he went to stay with them for a few days in December 2011.

To be fair even if Denise did abandon Daniel Ken abandoned him well before that and for so much longer They don't have to retcon Ken into being a really awful parent.

I have a feeling that Denise might pop up in CS. There are rumours Joanie might leave Emmerdale which means the actress would be free and when Kate Oates was asked about Denise returning she didn't give a clear answer.
