David Tennant is an example of an actor who kept his private life completely private (Cumberbatch looks like a Kardashian by comparison) and it certainly hasn't hurt him or his career. For years he literally never spoke about or even acknowledged the existence of his wife or children, walked out of interviews where she was mentioned, and made her enter and leave events separately and walk a few yards behind him so they couldn't be photographed together. Then after their second kid, he did start talking about them in interviews. And it worked. He is left alone by the press. Most of his fanbase are pretty vociferous in defending his privacy. When his son was born his fandom knew about it but the media never even knew his wife had been pregnant until he did an interview promoting a project and randomly mentioned, "I had a son six months ago." There are a handful of crazy fans on Twitter who hate his wife, but there are no 'fake baby' conspiracy theories and nothing like the full-on cult that exists around Cumberbatch, Stewart and Pattinson, the Outlander stars, the guys from Supernatural, the 50 Shades leads.
I think mostly it happens with less well-known stars or newcomers, and they're encouraged to keep their real relationships out of the public eye. Or maybe they just don't care and think any publicity is good publicity. Re the studio encouraged showmances, I always think of the Cinderella press tour a few years ago with Lily James and Richard Madden. As I said, I follow some GoT things and I was a bit of a fan of his. Everyone knew both of them were in high profile relationships but his hugging and kissing and staring at James really put me off him. They probably all knew the game, and were happy to play it, and as you say, this was their big break, so they were probably told to up the romance for publicity. But it made me feel uncomfortable. I'll admit I'm not really the demographic and it might have got some tweens in to see the film. |

There is a bizarre notion amongst tinhats that random Pr teams can instruct the biggest stars on the planet how to behave and the celebs just mindlessly obey, even if this means committing crimes, because CONTRACTS. That the likes of Tennant is free to avoid all questions around his baby is proof that the reverse is true. PR reps are sacked by celebs all the time.

There are lots of actors who are far more private than Cumberbatch and no one accuses them of having fake marriages and fake kids. It's just they're not the Internet's fantasy boyfriend.
Closeting and bearding (or relationships for PR) do still exist - first hand experience - but personally I don't believe beard relationships progress to marriage, unless maybe Scientology is involved because that's a whole 'nother kettle of crazy. Plenty of actors keep their lives as private as possible. Meryl Streep has never been short of work and has never really put her family in the limelight. Many have careers without ever having their families in photoshoots and with minimal intrusion. Some of the wait until they are in their 30s, then leave Hollywood and bring up their children quietly. Julia Roberts, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, Jodie Foster and many others have managed to keep their children out of the public eye. The problem can be that some kids use they parents fame to get attention, which blurs the lines. There is the Brat Pack, of Brooklyn Beckham, Rocco Richie, Raffety and Iris Law, and many others that basically make a career out of having famous parents and don't do much other than party. There are some insane people...in there fangroups.....The Tom Hiddleston fans, first harrassed Taylor because she was dating him (showmance or not, they had a fling, we don't know what was in their heads or what was really happening..) They would have hated her no matter what. The 1D fans still hate her for dating Harry Styles and for the fact they still seem to like each other. There was not anger or bitterness in Taylor's songs about them. They were just too young and too famous, for it to work. It is noticable that Harry has been much more private since and he has a right to try and have a private life. And then the Tom Hiddleston fans decided they hated Taylor even more because she and Tom broke up, and they believed whatever The Daily Mail wrote about them. The story seems to be that Taylor is some maneater and all men are helplessly controlled by her, and none of them have minds of their own, which was her point in Blank Space. They seemed to know where Tom Hiddleston was, when he was in LA, where Taylor Swift's plane was. The fans that did like them together where making them subject of Fanfiction, where Tom and Taylor have a married life and children and they are all having breakfast together, and it is frighteningly obsessive. Some of them then started attacking Tom Hiddleston on Twitter because didn't react as they wanted and doesn't have any animosity with Taylor Swift as the hoped he would. They have a fantasy about a bromance between Tom and Chris Hemsworth. I am not surprised that they broke up because both of them were subject to horrible harassment and it is not good for a healthy relationships, when one of you has fans that seem to know your every move. It is a scary time to be famous, I don't think people realise what they are signing up for until it is too late. |

On the 'mum' note, if you browse through any given fandom on Tumblr, there is a deeply disturbing trend for people referring to actors as 'son, my son, my precious son' etc. too. It makes my skin crawl.
It was when I was reading that they knew where Taylor's plane was and where Tom was and somehow are able to track her location at anytime because they track her private plane, that is got so creepy. I am a Taylor Swift fan, but I would never need to know where she is or who is with her and when. There is being a fan and there is being an obsessive, that think they should have any say in how someone lives their lives. |

The Camrens are bonkers and they hate the fact that Lauren has come out as bi but is clearly with Lucy. Camilla has written about her crushes on Harry Styles and Justin Beiber - she seems straight to me.
I remember when Harry and Niall were being bromantic back in the day and the insane Larries said that their friendship was a management stunt to cover up Larry. When Harry started hanging out with Xander Ritz they said the same thing. Another tinhat fandom gathering traction are the Kaylors, who believe Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift have been in a relationship for years, despite KK being in a long term relationship with a guy. Karlie and Taylor look like sisters but Karlie is with the Josh Kushner (The Kushner brother that didn't vote for Trump...) and Taylor is also a close friend of Cara Delevingne and seems to be comfortable in her heterosexuality and secure enough to be friends with people that are gay. She is also a great friend to Todrick Hall. But it is sad that people can not be close friends without it being a scandal. Taylor also has mad "fans" who now hate her because she is no longer 17, with long curly hair and cowboy boots. And believe all the crap. Because obsessive fandom seems to turn to obsessive hate, it an instant. Then there are all these obsessive fan groups that call the person they fan over such as Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, ...Mom and seem to think they can have to be like them. They have to agree with them on everything, they have to gang up as fans on someone else to be true fans. A bit like football fans fighting in the streets. I remember years ago a CSI forum where Jorja Fox fans were turning Vegetarian because of her and had to drink the same beer that she does. Because that is what true fans do. They wanted Jorja to approve of them. |

And I agree about the Royal Family. They are basically the nation's pets, ( stolen from AA Gill, but so accurate) We do own them. Actors and singers sell their films and songs. They talk about their films and songs etc. If we like them, we buy their songs and watch their films. I don't need pictures of their babies to like their films or songs more.
I can think of a few that are very protective of their children. Adele, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have not released the name of their new daughter. Tamsin Greig didn't reveal the names of her children for years. Andy and Kim Murray have kept Sophia out of the press too. The Late David Bowie stepped out of the Limelight so he could be a father to Lexie and was able to go about NYC with her unnoticed. Just because you get zelebs who want every part of their pregnancy in the papers and constant attention, (Imogen Thomas and Stephanie Davies.) Those that are famous for a good reason are often more protective. I too would never, ever, approach anyone famous if I saw them, they are entitled to go about their day without having to be famous. |

But Prince William and Prince Harry both hate being in the spotlight too much and hate the press. They grew up with cameras everywhere and where never comfortable and no Prince William is very, very, protective of his children and of Kate. The Press resent it but you can't blame them.
I also felt so sorry for Kate, the way she was harassed for years and years. |

I too would never, ever, approach anyone famous if I saw them, they are entitled to go about their day without having to be famous. The likes of Imogen Thomas, Stephanie Davies, Peter Andre the Kardashians etc either don't have the talent, or like Andre and Stephanie Davis, aren't talented enough to make a living out of acting or singing, so they have to sell their own lives as some sort of soap opera. Their children, their weddings, their divorces are all part of the way they make their money. Actors and singers make their money through making films/TV/Music etc. They don't need to sell their families to the highest bidder, and nor should they. But the expectation is that we should know everything about every celebrity, whoever they are because we see so much from the reality star nonentities. I've heard the David Tennant rumours re: his marriage. They have been going since before the birth of the 4th child. But as someone said above, some fans hate his wife, so who knows if they are rumours made up by them, or are really true. The fact is, that he has stayed silent and kept his private life private, so no one will really know. He also has good friends, who don't spill to the papers. I think the best way to keep your private life private is do what Tennant and Matt Smith do, and keep well away from social media. |

The only trouble with staying private is that it means tinhatters get even more frenzied and say that the celeb child doesn't exist because they've rarely seen it. It's impossible to win with these people.

The Dr Who fandom is much more established and the there are far more people to focus on than just five boys. The 1d fandom is probably the biggest there has ever been for a band, hence the sheer number of Larries. Currently, Louis hasn't been pictured with Freddie for a few months and Larries are blogging about Babygate having ended behind the scenes. It`s crazy - Louis only moved to LA for Freddie and he's still there.

The tin hatting in the Who fandom tends to be over the missing episodes (the BBC destroyed many 1960's episodes in the 70's, assuming they were worthless) not any person.
I read the whole of that hkn blog because of this thread, so thanks for that, I guess. |

Speaking of lunatic 1D fans, has anyone seen the sheer amount of vitriol directed at Liam and Cheryl because it appears she is actually pregnant?
They're all legitimately batshit crazy. |

There has been a few suggesting this, is it true? Who knows. When his wife suddenly turned up at an award show with David, lets just say 99% said they thought they had split and she had a new partner.
The blind items are submitted by the 'fans' on twitter who have a psychotic hatred for his wife. They have been tweeting for seven years their own version of their relationship. Although at the start they used to run a hate blog directed at her referring to her as the child and him as the Lord, creepy stuff.According to them his wife is an evil goldigger who trapped him in a plot involving her father. After the announcement of their second child they have been claiming that their marriage is a sham and they are secretly separated but pretending to be together, she is stealing all his money and he hates her. They rip her apart calling her useless, a bad mother, a domestic abuser, linking to newspaper articles and making sniping remarks aimed at her. They are obsessive. There is one particular one who feeds the others with information and they all lap it up. So they have always been there. Recently they have become more proficient at spreading these around on gossip and blind items sites. Last year they started spreading rumours about a baby with a secret girlfriend presumably the pr woman. The blind item was submitted the same week that they were cackling about it on their twitter accounts. The earlier popbitch email regarding the award show is contradicted by a picture of them together after the awards show looking very happy. Quote:

The press hardly discuss him and his wife so I don t see how they can be dropping hints of anything.Quote:

Noone in fandom or anywhere else thought this apart from the twitter 'fans' who do turn up on different websites.Quote:

I think the privacy has spurred on some of these fans. They believe he hates her and is ashamed of her because he didn’t used to mention her.Quote:

Minus the fake baby rumours, I think they are very similar to the cumbercrazies. Developing their own deluded theories to distract from the reality that he is married to another woman and a much younger and prettier woman. Again these fans are middle aged women and made a huge thing when the first got together that he should be with an older woman and not a child as they called her. Unfortunately for cumberbatch it shows that these fans do not go away, if anything they become more vicious over time. I suspect this group will still be here in ten years, they have already devoted seven years of their life to it.

It's Larries vs Ziams on Tumblr at the moment. The few remaining Ziams are squawking that it isn't Liam's baby whereas some of the Larries say they'll accept the baby if Liam makes a statement. Amy @ lesbianslovelouis is reminding her followers that the Bears predicted this way back in 2015, when they appeared next to a tube of Colgate toothpaste.

They interpret it as (Cheryl) Cole-gate and will probably start calling the whole situation this sooner or later. It's very entertaining watching their mangled contortions as they
try and make sense of it all. |
