Manufacturers seem to want to develop and 'own' their own. I guess there could be native Android code that some of the smaller companies could use.

Some Chinese-made phones support VoLTE (although not always in the UK, but rather places like India) so perhaps there is off the shelf code available. But the big companies still want to do things themselves.

Apple only has its own devices, so can't really be compared.
The comparison could be made if only Google would take control of its OS and make core issues like this standard on Android. It's a lack of will by them, not a lack of ability.

Hmm okay

I wish we could have a mobile OS that is both written competently *and* not a jail cell for an overpriced phone. Unfortunately it's one or the other.

I am not sure manufacturers want Google taking even more control, and I'm sure the EU and others would frown upon it too.

Of course, dialers, messaging apps and the like can and sometimes are released through the Play store for all users to try. HTC was one of the first. Now you can also get the BlackBerry Hub for any Android phone, but it's not free after a trial period.

Choice is good. I don't think I'd want to give that up in order to have every phone looking like a Nexus/Pixel. Much as I love the camera on the XL, and have to admit the phone performs very well too, there's more I can do with my Mate 9 or most other phones.

And some people want uniformity, others want to customise the hell out of the device. Android gives those choices.

I do SIM-only contracts with unlocked and affordable phones bought from wherever. I've simply given up on the idea that of one day using VoLTE. Perhaps it might be possible in the distant future...

I'd be very surprised if EE decide to "launch" this on the week right before Xmas.

Of course it may be they've covered all bases so nothing can go wrong once the account provision is done.

EE must have a wind-down phase with nothing happening until the new year. Like when a chunk of back-end staff go on holiday.

Officially it has launched. I don't think the press has really mentioned it isn't working, so EE can do things pretty quietly if it so desires.

Yeah, just thinking on the other hand if the 800 is actually broadcasting and working fine in testing, if provisioning does go wrong again then worst that could happen is some customers don't see it while others do.

Of course it could go TITSUP and everyone can access 800, including non-800 devices and EE get a shit tonne of failed / dropped calls

I see Georgie-boy is still losing his sh*t over on the EE community forums...
I thought he'd ran out of gums to bump... seems not. He'll be silenced soon enough.

I remember when 4G on Three was delayed by 90 days and people were going mad, then other people say they would rather wait and have these companies get it right and resolve a problem rather than launching something which isn't ready and causes lots of calls, upset etc.

I can't understand people who cannot wait a few weeks for something to be released, it is only because of this thread and others on the EE forums that people even knew it was planned for release a couple of weeks back.

The sad thing is this isn't even anything that big, it's service on a particular piece of spectrum which is not something you can complain about as the company makes no promises about technical delivery of the service which you contracted with them to provide, if he read his contract it won't say anything about specific frequencies etc.

I just find it bizarre when people embarress themselves by going crazy on the EE forums over something like this, toys out of the pram, tears before bed time all over a few weeks delay to a particular piece of spectrum access.

Sorry I just had to get that off my chest.

I feel the opposite way. Telling somebody the messed up with something is not embarressing. I have an opinion and will write it here,EE forum, twitter or everywhere else. I have the rights to do so So you like it or not is your problem but not mine

I am asking for update on the 4G800 like you did on the EE forum. Should I go through all your posts there and check how many times you have asked EE for updates on 4G800. I am upset as EE ignore customers and leave them out there without any explanations

Three was a bit different because they said it was launching, then when they hit problems they changed the story to it being a trial.

EE hasn't said it was/is a trial. Officially, it has launched. Go into a store and they'll say it launched in November. In reality, it hasn't.

But, while I'm disappointed I have not bombarded EE with Tweets and abusive comments and accusations (of lying) on its forum. I will discuss here because this is a thread about 800MHz on EE.

VoLTE stability is horrendous at the moment in Nottingham. I made a call to my sister that dropped 3 times over the space of about 5 minutes and then about 30 minutes later made a call to my girlfriend that dropped 2-3 times in the space of about 10 minutes.

Not good stats.

It's not necessarily the words you choose, but the tone and context in which you use them. Perhaps English isn't your mother tongue so you get some grace on that one. The constant poking and provoking comments are inexcusable however.

Please sit back, relax and join the conversation with constructive comments in a mature and respectful manner and we'll all get on!

We don't dislike you Georgi so please chill and play with us nice!

I'm in Kent, and i've found VoLTE reliability to be very good, better than CS calls as far as I can tell.

I always had issues with CS calls dropping, or my phone not ringing (despite being in a good coverage 2G/3G/4G/4G+ area.
SMS over 4G has become a lot more reliable too, i've found it a lot better than over 3G or 2G - I always had messages come through late either by hours or days. Not so much with 4G.

Also, I had 3G calls around here sound like static a lot, and because the 3G network was so contested here I rarely got HD voice, or usable voice quality at all. 2G/4G are alright for calls around here, but 3G around here is awful. (Also speedtests around 0.1mbps/0.1mbps) when right next to the mast.

If EE works anything like my employer (also a large telco) then there'll be a change embargo coming in soon enough. Nothing gets changed to the live network unless it is a justifiable emergency. No one wants to be the person to break the network while everyone's off work and everyone else is unwrapping their new phones or getting pissed for new years'.
