So my PC monitor is actually a TV. Bought a soundbar to improve the sound. I was going to connect l&r on the tv to l&r on the soundbar. However the PC is connected to the TV by HDMI, so would the PC still being "outputing" if the is the right word to the TV's internal speakers?

Anyway. Are you absolutely certain that the TV has audio outputs on phono sockets (I presume that is what you mean by l&r?) Most TVs these days only sport digital (usually optical) outputs and headphone jacks, though these seem to be an endangered species.

The phono sockets on the TV are much more likely to be INPUTS so be totally useless to connect the sound bar.

If you told us the make and model of TV and soundbar it would be easier to offer more precise advice.

As for the TV speakers making a noise with the soundbar connected. If you use a headphone socket on the TV then that might mute the TV speakers. Some TVs can configure the headphone jack as a Line out which does not mute the TV speakers so you need to be mindful of that (knowing make and model of TV makes it easier to advise properly).

If you connect via an optical digital out then the speakers will still be active. Again without knowing the TV it is impossible to be more precise but there may be an option to disable the speakers if using an external sound system.

The TV Model is LG LG 40UF770V I am 80% certain about the phonos but not entirely sure as the online manual is not very clear.

I wanted to use the single aux socket for my ipod, but If I need to use the headphone jack I suppose I could get an rca to aux cable and plug the ipod into the l&r on the soundbar)

(and yes I know the soundbar is not hifi quality!)

Audio out on phonos hasn't been around for a good few years now, is your set an old one?.

You are indeed correct Nigel, they are not Audio out's they are RGB connections, (I was mistaken) but reading the manual of the soundbar I can connect via the headphone jack, so that is my plan.

They are 'Component' sockets, not RGB.

Phono outs for audio was a VERY, VERY useful feature, that has long since disappeared

Sony 'did' provide a good audio connection, via the headphone/line-out socket - which you could configure to a good range of different options. However, and sadly, the new sets seem to only have a headphone socket, which can't be configured.

Agree with you there Nigel, my Sony is connected to a soundbase via its headphone socket.

The soundbar was faulty (high pitched noise from the aux input) and so will return. I have connected my creative speakers to PC and ipod via an old manual switch I had and this works wonders. Wil connect the tv to the switch when I get another cable.
