I think it's funny that people say dislike of Marlon is bandwagon jumping when the argument could just as easily be made that those coming onto say that are jumping on that bandwagon

I don't like Marlon but at this point there are so many characters that are more annoying than him and need to go like Kerry, Chrissie, and Doug.

I like all three of those characters but agree that Chrissie and Kerry need toning down. Doug is actually quite a realistic character, he's a moaning old fart yes but most blokes his age usually are!!
You are right about him being the grumpy old man but they need a balance to it, Eric is at times a grumpy old man but it doesn't come off as annoying with him.

Couldn't have put it better myself. And he was utterly loathsome during his affair with Laurel while she was still married to Ashley. He showed his true colours then his Mr Nice Guy routine was shown to be an act. I was never a huge fan of his character but after that I couldn't stand him and still cant even now. I thoroughly enjoyed the breakdown of Marlon and Laurel's relationship - it couldn't have happened to a nicer couple.
I think that is an issue as well, are these nice characters actually that nice? Perhaps the viewers that don't like them, don't like some if the things they do and that they are still portrayed as being good people. Paddy for example has alwats been a bit iffy. Let's remember thst Tess was not his first affair. He also cheated on Emily with Viv, got with Rhona when she was barely out of Marlons bed and decided to move Rhona and Marlons son to the other side of the world just because he wanted a better life for him, even though he already had a life most people would give their right arm for. He is, on short, wuite selfish. Sulky and petulant plus able to hurt and betray his wives and friends. Yet he behaves like he is always the one being hard done by. True, compared to the killers resident he (and Marlon and Laurel) are on the side of the angels but they are not so 'nice'that any viewer that dislikes them must be morally suspect themselves. |

I never actually used to mind Marlon until he got together with Laurel and from then on he (along with Laurel too to be honest) became increasingly unlikeable to the point I just wanted to vomit everytime their lovey dovey scenes came on. What made it worse was their storyline started demonising all the other characters to the point they were unreasonably out of character! All this just to convince us Maurel was an undying love story meant to be. (YUCK!)
Obviously Maurel aren't together anymore (thank God) but sadly the damage has been done and I haven't liked either of them since. Doesn't help that the current, excellent Dementia storyline involving Ashley is a further reminder that Maurel never should've happened to begin with. |

That relationship was very damaging to both of them in terms of being sympathetic or likeable characters. They tried their best to have it appear that they were noble, refusing to give into their overwhelming love for each other until Ashley proved himself to be a cruel and unreasonable man by 'beating' his father so it was fine for Laurel tp leave him. But there were a lot of viewers that just didn't buy it and saw it as them betraying Ashley and Laurel abandoning him when he was at his lowest ebb. I'm not excusing any form of domestic abuse but it was so out of character that it arguably demonstrated hiw unabke to cope Ashley was with his life, and specifically caring for Sandy and if Laurel was ax nice as she makes out, she'd have helped him,nit waltzed off with one of his friends.

This is why I usually prefer the out and out "bad " characters. They don't pretend to be decent human beings. |

Excellent post Kitkat and I particularly agree with the Bib. It's the hypocrisy surrounding them that annoys me.
This is why I usually prefer the out and out "bad " characters. They don't pretend to be decent human beings. In real life, I wouldn't go near somebody like Cain, I doubt many of us would, both from a sense of morality and self preservation. Even those that fancy him rotten. The band wagon accusation always baffles me. Why can't people have just independent of each other reached the same conclusion? Often for varying reasons. I separate the art from the artist. There are some actors I've really liked when I've seen them interviewedbut I can't stand the character they play due to the writing or the way they act the part. Ewually, adore some characters but think the actor is a bit of a tosser. And sometimes it is both, like the actor and character, dislike the character and actor. Mihht also mention that there are different ways of liking a character. You might like them as a person in so much you recognise they are nice but not enjoy watching them but like a chatacter as you find them interesting but not like them as a person. The best characters, it tends to be a combination, sometimes they are 'nice' and sympathetic, other times they aren't. Gennie and Nikhil, another two nice characters who were generally well liked. |

Exactly. At least somebody like Cain makes no pretense about what he is. There is an honesty there, plus his somewhat satdonic sense of humour is more entertaining to watch. It is fiction at the end of the day, we watch to be entertained.
