Well inadvertently or not you just hit the nail on the head. Aside from the fact its pretty much common knowledge that the episode will be taking the superhero concept as a starting point and then going somewhere else with it, the time to be clutching your pearls and crying 'this isn't Doctor Who!' sailed a long time ago. For instance when we had a talentless Australian pop princess (for whom the only reason for casting seemed to be 'because we can') boarding a flying Titanic in a cheese-ball pastiche of The Poseidon Adventure. I mean come on. It's the Christmas special. Only four of the things have been even remotely re-watchable. Another example of your damned if you do or youre damned if you dont. If Moffat served up 'Heaven Sent Part 2' on Christmas day many fans would be calling it career suicide. But if he does anything too populist then people don't like that either. There's no winning.

I also didn't like the comment on that the window was built to withstand 4 nuclear blasts. Because firstly the glass is incredibly thin and was broken with utter ease and the building would also melt. The line itself was also too long, it is the same as what Moffat did in Heaven Sent it is 50 times stronger than diamond. It just isn't necessary to add.
Also another minor issue, why not try and shoot the superhero in the face instead of the body? Just saying. |

Do we really need to be asking why the bad guy doesn't shoot someone in the face? Plus it's classic bad guy moves. Why would anyone with serious intentions about taking over the world go to the trouble of strapping James Bond to a table and aiming a laser beam at his Jaffa's when he could just as easily have shot him in the back or chucked him in a shark tank? |

People are allowed to have there doubts about an episodes premise. I feel this may go too far to the mystical.
1) He isn't really 'super' at all and is just a regular guy using trickery or tech to fool people into thinking he is. He will be riddled with self doubts about this and the fact he is not a 'real' hero (he will also have probably suffered a personal loss or tragedy...it's basically The Next Doctor- Marvel edition) but by the episodes end the Doctor will have shown him that he really was a hero all along, inspired him to save the world and taught him (and us) the lesson that the finest heroes don't need to wear capes. 2) He's an alien, exiled or lost from his home planet, maybe from the future (possibly last of his kind which causes the Doctor to see him as a kindred spirit, despite having doubts about his motives...it's nailed on the Doctor will not like the guy to begin with either way) who is using his alien powers to dazzle the locals and create a myth. The Doctor will teach him the importance of honesty and decency and that people will like him and respect him regardless of his magical abilities. By the end the Doctor will either a) revive his dead people or use the Tardis to take him back to his home planet/his own time period or b) realise he's not so bad after all and that he can stay on Earth, protecting it because as we all know ' the doctor can't be there all of the time'. Cue stirring music. Begrudging respect (think Robot of Sherwood). They shake hands. The end. Oh and I believe there's a kid or two in the cast.So you can be sure there will be a morality lesson about what true heroism is and the nature of belief, and as it's Christmas maybe some handy parallels between the Superhero and Santa Claus. At some point a bratty kid will lose faith in the Superhero but by the episodes end? Santas dropping merchandise for the very same guy down everyones chimneys. Get yourselves down Ladbrokes folks. I'm giving you free money with this stuff! |

Didn't like it at all.
Awful OTT American accents. Never been a fan of super heros and IMHO they have no place in DW. It looked like a parody of itself. |

My suspicions are, and this is based on nothing I have heard or read and so is pure speculation (spoiler free), but mark my words- bookmark this post or screenshot it. It's one for the ages. I'm a soothsayer...

Well I loved it! The only bit I didn't get was where the hell Nardole was when he just sauntered in.
But apart from that I thought it looked good. And as for Moffat jumping on the Super Hero bandwagon...that genre is still very popular with Marvel on the big screen and DC on the small. It's got relevance. Give it a chance on Christmas Eve/Day/Boxing Day (see what I did). And Justin Chatwin who plays the Super Hero is Canadian, so can easily do the American accent, so no cod pronouncements there. But one question remains... Who is Doctor Mysterio? Might not be who you think... |

Dr Who Clip
As Moffat is a dialogue-heavy writer (and that should really be spelt direlogue most of the time) then we're never going to get the soaring, pulse-pounding action sequences his predecessor could come up with in a heartbeat. So we get more people in a room standing around being smart-arsey with one another. 2018 really can't come along soon enough (as far as this show is concerned); last roll of the dice I suspect...

Im looking forward to the first new Who in a year...
But a couple of things seem odd. 1. Nardole. How and why is he back in one piece. (I'm sure we will get some kind of explanation ) 2. Set in New York?? I thought the Doctor could never travel there again after the angels episode where he lost amy and rory. |

Well, he said "those windows, like everything in this building..." so presumably that includes the actual fabric of the building. Still a bit OTT though.

I thought the scene was okay. Not terrible but not brilliant either.
The episode I think won't be awful but it won't be spectacular either. It does feel more of the same to a degree. I do like the look of the Ghost, even though the mask could be a little better. |

Yea, I didn't like the four nuclear blasts thing either. As most kids know what a wrecking ball is these days courtesy of Miley, I think we'd all have accepted the villain saying a 5,000lbs wrecking ball instead. At least that's testable in laboratory conditions and standards.
I very much doubt Everest Windows asks North Korea if they can place a few windows around their test sites as they really want to use it as a unique selling point within their brochures. Moffat needs to step away from the 'epic'. |

Hmm. Obviously an out of context clip is hard to judge the possibility of a good or bad episode, and an actual trailer would have given more as to what it might entail, but just based on that clip, I sort of have a 2 part opinion.
At first, I was thinking 'this actually looks quite suave and engaging' and felt encouraged by the scene, but then when the superhero turned up, he, his outfit, and everything he did just seemed cheesy. |

Dr who is better than this. Other movies are available. More than ever, in fact. As for the superhero in the clip, let's wait and see how this works in the context of the story. I'm sure this will be just like Santagate in 2014. |

It's undeniable that more of these movies are getting made now, but there's only around five or six of them per year. "Saturated the movie industry" is a bit hysterical.

Hear hear! It's a myth that comic book movies are saturating the market. I forget the exact stats but I think last year for instance that more Westerns were actually made by major studios and given a cinema release than superhero films but they weren't very good/popular so nobody went to see them. The Marvel and DC stuff appears to be everywhere because its what people want right now and Marvel at least are having a pretty unprecedented run of films that are both critical and commercial successes. But this idea that Hollywood is forcing this stuff down peoples throats at the expense of other genres is actually just not true. Check the numbers. They are still making all sorts of movies. You just need to go and see them and occasionally look a bit further than Screen 1 at the Vue.
But as to the current episode - I'm over looking the 4 nuclear bombs line because quite frankly it bores the hell out of me that people are willing to criticise the merits of one frigging line! And as to Super Heroes who can fly in Doctor Who's world - why the hell not! People were saying for years in the show's absence you can do absolutely anything with the show - Comedy, high drama, etc. And here at last is Moffat trying to do exactly that and people are still thinking the show should be only done one way. Maybe there is a reason why there is a Super Hero, who cares. I'm going to watch it on Christmas Eve/Day/Boxing Day or whatever day it's on over Christmas and I will enjoy every minute of it. So there. ![]()
