There are 6,500 languages in the world. If we put sub-titles up for all of them, we would not see the screen. Sub-titles in English for the hard-of-hearing is necessary, in English. All the Polish people that I know have learned to speak English; any other migrants, who we welcome, must learn English, the language of this country

Aye but if there was a scene of Polish people for instance at home just with each other then they wouldn't speak English would they, even if they could.

Corrie had a great chance to introduce a Polish family a number of years ago with the character of Wiki Dankowska. She was potentially a great character played by a decent actress but the show just left her to fade away and she ultimately left the show.

I would love to see a non-British family in Coronation Street or EastEnders, especially in the current climate that we live in. I would also fully welcome subtitles at times when they may be needed.

As others have said, the problem comes from introducing them as a family. When a family is together in their own home they would speak their own language so there are some limitations there. Perhaps they could be introduced as a mixed group of immigrants for whom English is a lingua franca? Or maybe a British/English speaking boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife could be part of the family, meaning that English is spoken more frequently,

The success of shows like The Killing, The Bridge and Deutschland 83 show that there is an interest in foreign language broadcasting in the UK, while current shows like The Missing and Paranoid both have scenes completely in German with English subtitles. English speakers need to get over themselves.

Let's also not forget that a Polish immigrant was part of Tony Warren's original cast in Coronation Street way back in 1960.

Great idea. Strange it wasn't introduced yet. I don't think lack of polish actors is problem, they can cast them in Poland , it's only 2.5h flight.

Come to think of if - can't remember the Masoods speaking Pakistani at home (OK, all actors being Indian they probably couldn't speak the language anyway) . Watched EE since 2001 and vaguely remember an Indian family - don't think they spoke Indian at home either. But that Lithuanian market geezer did speak his own language with his wife and daughter (as far as I remember).

Wiki was fab and she held her own against Janice.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

I'm not the one promoting the ideas that stealing and dodgy dealing are the dominant traits of Polish people. I must sound even more stupid to you saying that.

That sounds like more of a description of a storyline involving English woman big mo.

Would be worth a try
Corrie fails miserably every time they try and bring an Asian family

EE in London would be hard to believe there wouldn't be an eastern European family there somewhere

Not sure about that
let's say they're 2nd or 3rd generation they would speak English very well and their children would be mainly English speakers
My sis in law is filipino , they speak English at home as the children were born here

I remember they had a Polish bloke some years ago, while Kath was at the Vic. He tried to rape her.

What was the nationality of the market inspector that Roxy went out with, he was Eastern European, his wife and daughter came over and he was trying to keep them and Roxy apart. Every Polish, Lithuanian, Romanian person I have met have been lovely and hard working, not like some of the work-shy Brits around here.

Would be great to get some Polish workers in Corrie to show up the lazy sods constantly working on freebies in the factory !

There's so many polish/ east European communities throughout the UK now - there's no reason why a wee place like Emmerdale couldn't have some east European inhabitants.
