CS- your highlights of 2016
Hi all! As we speed on through November and head towards Christmas season I thought it would be good to start a thread where Corrie fans can post about some of their highlights of 2016 - anything that stood out for you for all the right reasons, especially as we have moved between 2 eras this year in blackburn/Kate Oates
Highlights for me : Kylie's death scenes- had me sobbing genuine tears at a fictional character which I had never done before and was completely moving and refreshing after such an long, drawn-out storyline The BGT stunt- not the build up or aftermath to it, which I was less impressed with, but the stunt itself- it was clever, it drew the different storylines together of Carla/ nick , the platts and Callum , roy and Cathy and Tracy and Robert. Leanne's preganancy- I am a huge fan of the work of Jane Danson on the show so I am happy that this storyline is progressing with the added interest of MIchelle's preganancy too. It feels like a storyline that eastenders would do , but that is not a bad thing for Corrie at this point Nods to the past- Corrie has such a rich history so the nods to the past we have seen recently I am really glad about. Sarah platt's breakdown- I thought Tina O'Brien did a great job with this storyline despite being compared to Stacey's psychosis in Eastenders , the scenes where she barricaded herself into the house were heartbreaking . Returns!!- pretty happy with who is back so far - especially looking forward to the Christmas return of a certain Battersby sister- as EE and ED have both said to expect happier christmases this year, I hope Corrie are going to crank up the drama for us. Hopes for 2017: Good HUMOUR Rest the platt's Big Barlow storyline and Webster storylines with their returns Strong storylines for strong male characters Explosive Leanne/Michelle pregnancy reveal with real consequences |

Pat Phelan's return - was a stroke of genius bringing him back, completely with great one-liners and him winding Anna up.
Carla finally buggering off - hated the whole stuff with her and Tracy which seemed to take up the first half of the year, so was glad when she finally got in the cab and left. Sarah's breakdown Kylie Platts death The scene with David Platt leaving a video message before his planned suicide. Found the aftermath of him frying Anna disappointing though. Despite my initial dislike for the Sharif affair plot, I liked the aftermath (despite it being written hastily due to the actor's real life sacking) and loved the scenes between Yasmeen and Zeedan dealing with his betrayal and disappearance. Last night's episode involving Michael was great also, and I found it quite sad. Glad they didn't go down the route of having Phelan bludgeon him to death. |

The thing I am enjoying most is the references to the past, acknowledging characters' history & building s/ls around it, something we NEVER got throughout the Blackburn era!!
Carla leaving (though not the exit itself which was horrendous) as she had been a spent force for about two years previously, yet still every storyline seemed to have to revolve around her!! The Kylie exit!! Shame she had to leave but some of the best drama I've seen on Corrie in many years & I liked how they tied it in with other characters who had been through similar experiences to David, in particular Maria!! Finally bringing Maria back into the show after years on the sidelines, not necessarily the current s/l which I know is irritating some people, but just in general, revisiting her recent and past history, tying up messy loose ends & making her more central to Street life once more!! The returns & planned returns!! Can't wait to see Toyah again, Rosie maybe not so much!! Much much better character interaction & more use of the whole cast rather than just endless s/ls involveping the same batch of half a dozen characters!! Great acting performances from the young Platts!! I was not a fan of Sarah in the year or so before she left & I hated her on her return, as seemingly did Tina O'Brien with her half hearted performances, but something changed with her in a BIG way with the live episode & since then she has been on fire ad an actress & has become one of my firm favourites!! Jack P Shepherd is aleays reliably brilliant!! The rise & rise of Lucy Fallon as Bethany!! She is now a real firm favourite character of mine, one I really find myself caring about!! For the first time in maybe 5 years, probably since the Frank Foster trial i find myself genuinely looking forward to the next episode of Corrie & that has only happened in the last say three months, so Kate Oates must be doing something right, though there's still issues & there's still a long way to go!! Thanks for this thread!! It's nice to look at the positives sometimes!!

The Sarah and Bethany storylines both Tina O'Brien and Lucy Fallon have both been fantastic.
Sarah and Gary romance. The Kylie death and aftermath with brilliant acting from Jack P. Shepherd |

I would like to see her integrated with the connors a bit more as Liam Jnr is one of them, but I definitely approve of her status as Michelle's new bff as they were family once. I am looking forward to the Rosie return as I just know she will come back , create merry hell for half the residents then disappear off before they all get a chance to blame her! |

Has he seen her before (off-screen) I know Sally goes to see her in London but has Tim? |

The return of Paddy Phelan was one of my favourites. The actor is so beleivable, and sinister. I look forward to seeing how he comes out of all the trouble he is in.

I echo the comments said about Maria. I have always loved her and it is great to see her at the forefront more after a good few years having done next to nothing to do.

Yes, I was pleased with the Michael exit and that it was kept secret- I'm hoping this will open up for more storylines for Andy and Steph, and who are utterly wasted on that show at the moment.
All could be great characters but Steph & Andy desperately need storyline action & Luke, imo, needs a couple of mates & certainly doesn't need involving in ridiculously unlikely relationships like Tracy |

Great thread OP.
The highlight for me this year has been Todd, Ive seen such a development of his character in the last 6 months. He was desperate to protect Jason and do right by him and I love his unwavering support of Sarah and Bethany, it feels so genuine. He's obviously knee deep in the Phelan storyline now so that's another interesting aspect for him. I wasn't keen on the idea of him and Billy but I actually like them as a couple now, he's softened a little and opened up to him about what happened in London. I really rate Bruno Langley, I hope he continues to get some decent storylines as he's one of the stronger cast members imo. |

2016 has been much better for Corrie than 2015!
Aidan/Maria. Kylie's Death. The returns of Jenny, Phelan, Rosie, Peter and Toyah! Leanne/Steve/Michelle. Carla'a Exit. BGT's stunt (Not the week itself). Nods to the past. Putting the Barlow's back at the forefront of the show. |

Phelan's return and reign as King of Weatherfield.
The reintroduction of JennyBradley, even though she hasn't had the best material to work with in her latest return. Sarah's breakdown. Kylie's death. Todd's character development. Bethany's character development. The revitalisation of the Barlow clan. And I'm not sure if this last one counts as a highlight or a lowlight but... Izzy's bad high - I haven't laughed so much at a soap all year.

No particular highlights in terms of story lines
Credit to Leanne, Gemma, Pat Phelan, Jenny Bradley, Tim and Sarah-Lou for the best performances. Hopes for 2017 -Total clampdown on self-indulgent pop culture references in scripts -Steph to be seen in context other than waitressing (Have a night off, already) -A bit more on Freddie's back story - He looks like a man with a story to tell -Tyrone to re-decorate his abode -More scope for teenage characters - Craig, Faye & Simon -More screen time for Luke & Zeedan - The kind of unflashy characters who counteract some of the histrionics elsewhere -Fiz and Kirk to start acting like grown adults in their thirties (Sorry!!!!!) -Further development of Jenny/Johnny pairing - Most intriguing -Change of sponsors - Those meerkats are really starting to annoy me |

Another one whose return I hated & the Todd/Marcus thing was one of Corrie's lowest points for me but they have since done an ecxcellent job of rebuilding the character with lots of different layers, all of which Bruno is handling superbly!! Another of my current favourites!! That is another bonus of 2016 Corrie, I'm now finding that I am liking most of the characters again, whereas under Blackburn there was very few of them seemed really likeable!! (though tbf both Todd and Sarah's transformations were well on their way during Blackburn's tenure!!) |

my fave character Gemma Winter is my highlight of 2016. i am soooo happy the writers saw her potential and brought her back! even when she knocked about with Callum last yr, i knew she could become a good character, she was easily led i think that was the problem at 1st, but i was sure they could change her, and they did. now she's my fave character and i like that she made up with Kylie again before Kylie died
![]() Kylie's death made me gutted cos she was my fave character ever and i was gutted to hear she would b killed off. what made it worse tho, was CLAYTON. why was she stabbed to death by a random thug who had been in it for what, a week? if they wanted her to die, couldn't she of died fainting from a illness or something? but Paula Lane's and Jack P Shepherd's performances were great. then 4 yrs of her being my fave character ended as she talked then died in David's arms and it was heartbreaking to watch. but Paula will b on TV again i bet little comedy scenes and appearances from some of my fave characters. Kylie (til she died) Gemma, Tim, Peter, Mary, etc. Sarahs breakdown. Tina O' Brien's acting was great Discovery of Callums body in Gails manhole. again good acting from Jack, Tina and Paula i like what's been done with Bethany and Faye. they both used to b little bitches but seem to of had personality transplants this yr! especially Bethany, u can see how vulnerable she really is and Lucy Fallon plays her well |

Kylie's exit storyline was so sad and distressing that I took 4 weeks off from Corrie viewing afterwards. On the day I saw her exit, I thought it could take me 6 months to go back to Corrie, as I was so dreading it over Christmas. However .....
It only took me a short time to realise I was missing storylines for Leanne & Maria for example. Meanwhile, I have enjoyed many scenes for Sarah & sometimes Eva too. So, in ways Corrie feels fresher now than at the start of the year!

For me Tina O'Brien has came out of nowhere to really steal the limelight this year. Shes a great actress.
