BBC advertises Freeview HD capacity
An advert (slightly paraphrased) from this week's Broadcast:-
BBC MAKES AVAILABLE CAPACITY ON DTT MULTIPLEX B The BBC is offering to the market an amount of DTT capacity which could enable the acquiring party to launch a TV channel as early as March 2017. The part time capacity will be available between 9pm and 7am, 7 days a week and is suitable for one high definition television channel. This capacity is being offered through a competitive bidding process. Expressions of interest must be received by 12noon on 2 December 2016. *************** Presumably this is the spare capacity not required for CBBC HD. Must go to an HD offering as a result. Any thoughts? |

I've said it before, but this would be ideal for Film4 HD.

To be able to switch the TV on in the evening and not hear "boom boom boom boom boom, boom der lump bump bump" on an endless loop will be wonderful!
PS are they not advertising the equivalent SD capacity? Are they even allowed to? |

The equivalent SD capacity is on the BBCA mux, which may not be used for commercial TV. |

The hours aren't great. FIlm4 would be nice but presumably they could launch it in place of C4+1/4sevenHD if they wanted to. The fact they haven't suggests there could still be encryption agreements in place with Sky/Virgin.
I can just imagine QVC Beauty+1 HD or something equally disappointing. |

As far as I know, if the BBC is offering its own capacity, then it would be duty-bound to sell it to a broadcaster who meets certain minimum standards. I am sure that this so0rt of clause was present in a similar offer some years ago. A Babestation-type station would not meet those standards.

And I don't see any reason for a shopping channel to be in HD I just think it's a waste.. |

Given that I can receive BBCB and not COM7, my preference would've been for BBC Four (and thus CBeebies) in HD to go to the BBCB slot with CBBC HD going over to COM7 if necessary.
Not sure who'd want a post-9pm HD slot, if E4 or Film4 HD go FTA as rumoured, they'll likely take the C4 +1 HD slot in first instance. |

If the BBC would offer the SD slot at the same hours, which presumably is also vacant, I would support Talking Pictures getting an SD slot so more people can view it.

There is only one problem with this slot. The BBC have now lost the opportunity to simulcast in HD anything that is on BBC3's old capacity!
Shame on them for wasting time! |

There should be sections for shopping and specialist (religious, foreign language, gambling), like there is on all other TV platforms. There are currently 13 shopping channels so they really need their own section so people who like shopping channels can find them easily, whilst those that aren’t interested can avoid them. The proposed LCN listing structure should be changed slightly to this: 140 - general entertainment overspill 150 - shopping 180 - specialist I think channels should have to broadcast for a minimum of 14 hours a week during the hours of 6am and midnight, or for a minimum of 28 hours a week during the hours of midnight and 6am. This will reduce the number of channels hogging LCN’s by broadcasting a tiny amount of programming in the early hours when few people are watching and so not really affecting the main channel they are borrowing time from. |

They will almost certainly ignore me, but I've just replied saying:

I'd prefer to see something like: Entertainment channels 1-69 Shopping channels 70-89 Film channels 90-99 That way the shopping channels would all be grouped together (preferably to be hidden/deleted) but they'd be between two sets of general entertainment channels. They'd still whinge though. |

The only problem there is the shopping channels will squeal and lobby to stop such a change.
