That used to be variety. You could bung all of those on a show with a top act of the day and get 15 million viewers. Nowadays you would struggle to get 4 million.
These days viewers wouldn't mind watching the above being discovered (or otherwise) on BGT, but they wouldn't necessarily want to watch them again all that much.
So you have to add a bit of Noel, a bit of Beadle, a bit of Game for a Laugh, a bit of Takeaway into the mix and hope it creates a bit of........................buzz!
McIntyre and his format does this to an extent, but with all the competition, this modern style variety has a much harder task than its 60's to 90's predecessors. It has been displaced by the likes of SCD/IAC/BGT/XF as the king format-though as we have seen there is some tiredness with talent shows now.
Id love to see Peter Kay have a go at mainstream variety.
