Just been watching this again. But to me it looks like he goes out of step at around 0.19 in their dance. He picked it up quickly again though, and I thought it was really good. But was it perfect?

Not perfect but based on the Overmarking of Claudia ore and Louise it had to be scored as 40

Are any of them 'perfect'? If they were the 'trained' celebs would be pros. But in the context of last night's mediocrity and overmarking, danny deserved 4 tens imo.

Even with errors, Danny is fantastic and shows such a 'wow' factor in his dances.

It was as perfect as a dance learnt in 4 days can be.

Yes he did and it's a shame the judges couldn't point that out, seeing as they are more than happy to rip Greg a new one.

Agree with both of the above comments.

I wasn't looking for errors to be honest and didn't notice any, I just got carried away with a wonderful performance by Danny and Oti. Their Charleston was completely captivating in my opinion so I thought it was fully deserving of 40. I think he's been deserving of 40 in several dances.

A couple of former Strictly pros commented on Twitter that they'd have given Danny 10 last night and that there was over marking of other couples.

If I remember correctly, this is what Craig said on ITT when Zoe asked him what would make him finally give out a 10. For me a 40, or any 10 really, is saying that a dance created something special and magical. No celeb can create a perfect routine with 4 days' training.

To answer the thread's question, he seemed to be out of sync with Oti for a second or two near the start and I think he missed a step on the table (which wouldn't have been noticeable without the backing dancers). However, neither of these were glaring errors nor did they impact on the brilliance of the dance for me.

I thought his timing was slightly off in three places but it was ambitious choreography and, within the limitations of what I understand about Charleston, his technique was very good indeed. I can think of several previous celebs who got 40 for far less authentic dances (Abbey Clancey's so-called salsa) or much weaker technique (Lisa Snowdon's cha) so he deserved the mark in my eyes.

I agree and yes I think Craid did say that. 😊

I think if I scrutinised, paused and analysed every dance I might notice little tweaks to make for seemingly perfect routines. I think this would be the case for most celebs and pros. I'm sure I heard one of the pros say on ITT that they themselves often make mistakes but it's how they cover them up and perform during and after these moments that matters. Brendan also alluded to this in his DS column last week.

There were obvious errors from other couples who received 9s and 10s and those stood out to me (as lovely and as good as these dancers are).

If Claudia got 4 x 9s then yes, definitely, Danny deserved his perfect mark.

Yes there were some minor errors and timing issues but given the marking, the judges' had no option given the difficulty of Danny & Oti's choreography and the performance of the routine itself, to give him 40.

It was the most difficult routine of the night and the best performed in my view.

Danny is an outstanding dancer... Was that one of my favourite charlestons though? Would I watch I again? Definitely deserved to be the top scorer, but not a perfect 40,

I thought there was a brief moment towards the end, but it was Oti who made a mistake. She got back in sync straightaway but I might just be misremembering

Exactly this! I've rewatched Patrick Robinson's Chitty Chitty Charleston loads -- complete with an overbalanced messy lift and a few misfired swirly leg thingummies (expert alert!) and it always makes me smile. (Actually it makes me grin like an idiot.) Danny seems perfectly affable but he doesn't bring charisma to what he does on the dancefloor in the same way that others do (including Ore, Ed, Judge and my old favourite Patrick R). There's just something contagious and warm about some dancers.

Is technique inversely proportional to charisma?

I thought he deserved to top the leaderboard last night, any wee mistakes aside. I think sometimes people get too hung up on the actual scores the judges give out whereas I think leaderboard position is more important and the leaderboard is usually right and it was the same last night.

Agreed, the scores themselves aren't relevant, it's where they're placed on the leader board which counts and Danny was correctly at the top of it.

How could you even tell with those backing dancers confusing the whole thing . It wasn't a Charleston . They spent so much time apart it was impossible to tell if they were in sync .

Compare that to the wonderful Charleston done by Daisy and Alijaz where you could see they were in sync all the way through .

A 10 for me doesn't have to be perfect - a 10 means I am so swept away in the fun/power of the dance that I don't notice any tiny mistakes. If there was one, Danny covered it well. After the overmarking of Ore and Louise every week so far, Danny had to get 40 for that really. His Paso and Quickstep both should have been 10s.

I'd absolutely watch it again. It's one of my favourite charlestons along with Kimberley and Pasha's and Denise and James'. None of the three are the best dance I've ever seen, but they are excellent charlestons. I love the dance itself and those are the three I've enjoyed most.
