I do wish people would Really understand that this is NOT a dance competition if it were then we the Great British public would NOT get our say as the majority of us probably are not dance experts or trained to judge.
This is a prime time Saturday evening family entertainment show, the original format was to take "celebrities" and teach them to dance, alas because more and more "able to dance in the first place" celebs are invited to take part it somehow clouds those with no experience whatsoever who are genuinely trying their best.
Alas as people have got used to the "better abled" celebs those who are REALLY trying their very best are constantly slammed on here - so unfair.. I enjoyed the show much more when it wasn't so blooming predictable - the judges too need to get a grip and stop having obvious favourites.

I agree it's a Saturday evening entertainment show. if people want to watch a dance competition then start a petition for the Beeb to bring back a re-vamped Come Dancing.

It is a dance competition. Just not necessarily one to find the best dancer.

yep.
It's an entertainment programme based around dancing

It's exactly what most of millions think it is.

It used to be a dance competition for beginners and the public to enjoy their journey, but now it's a platform for trained dancers to get some exposure and get some good breaks. BBC might as well show the British and World dance championships.

Funny, I thought it was called Strictly Come Dancing, not Strictly Come Entertaining.

There would not be enough viewers, always hated the painted on smiles hate hate

and the criteria is not to have been trained ballroom or latin

Funny enough when someone dug around it was first billed under entertainment and proposed as such by the person who thought of the idea

No it didn't, it's been the same since the beginning when Claire Sweeney was a competitor in Season One.

In the words of the show's creator herself:

Quote:
““We needed to come up with a big Saturday night show and at a meeting we were discussing what hadn’t been tried,” Fenia, who then worked as the BBC’s Entertainment Commissioner, remembers.

“Out of the blue, I said ‘ballroom dancing’.

“My vision was for an entertainment show first and foremost, with celebrities out of their comfort zone.””

There have always been ringers and people using it to launch new careers in the theatre or wherever else. It's not a new occurrence.

I think a 'come dancing' format would be enjoyed by people who already dance or would like to but not a much wider audience beyond that. I couldn't see it surviving on BBC1 or BBC 2 but perhaps BBC 4.

I would prefer to see a workshop format that breaks down each dance in terms of its associated demands and provides tips on how to wing them

Sometimes ITT veers in that direction but never for long enough.

I'm happy for complete amateurs and trained celebs to participate so long as there's a realistic expectation of the former and people stopped shrieking "farce!" and "unfair!" if they outlast better dancers cos it's neither.

Ahem.
May I boldly intervene and say the show is whatever you want it to be.

And on that note I will swiftly run for cover.

It's whatever the person at home voting wants it to be.

Whether they're voting for the most entertaining, most improved, favourite personality or simply the best dancer is their prerogative. People questioning others voting habits like there's is somehow superior is the most irritating part of this show (and forum)

So what are most of them doing spending up to 8 hours a day training ?

Also both true. Dance appreciation is subjective.

To try to improve. That's part of the entertainment.

Strictly on my teli in my home is what I choose it to be . In my house it's entertainiment based on learning to dance . We get a great show every Saturday and my enjoyment is all about the costumes and hair and bling and glitter . I llove the celebs doing their very best to learn a dance to make a show to entertain us
