Just confimed on a516 digital that the new owners of motors tv are going to keep the channel on some platforms in europe and this includes Sky. So might explain the transponder chage.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Thanks for clearing that up.
Not necessarily a fan of the channel but I know lots of people who are including my son. So lets hope it stays.

Dave is a very popular channel and I'm a bit surprised they haven't any plans to open it up to a wider audience by adding it to freesat. Sky must be giving them a nice little sweetener to keep Dave behind a paywall.

Those who work in PR and viewer services for channels like the PSB's, and UKTV alike are the last to find out, if sometimes even after, when a change happens.

I really can't see Sky wanting to financially support Dave behind a paywall when it's FTA on DTT, and it's SD were talking about here too. I suspect it's contractual and when they can break from encryption they likely will. UKTV will need to migrate their second TP over to a spot-beam too if they don't want to have to faff around making Dave Ireland and Dave +1 FTV.

I suppose your right silly me never thought of the contract. I wonder how long the contract lasts? I take it's between 3 and 5 years and then it's up for negotiation.

They could but HD seems to be the format for most channels and with more and more channels broadcasting in Ultra HD I feel the sd versions of some channels mainly ones from the major players like Sky and UKTV will disappear and there will only be HD version. Of course this doesn't mean that HD channels won't appear on freesat but the way technology is moving HD and even Ultra HD will fade out over the coming years.

Encryption contracts between Sky and the broadcasters come in all different shapes and sizes. Some have a minimum tie-in period after which the broadcaster is free to walk (I have it on good authority E4's is along these lines - Sky's money is still top lucrative to C4 to walk from it). Other contracts have breaks at certain points along their life, Sky may allow, say, one broadcaster to walk free given a different deal done elsewhere. ITV did this on their remaining FTV regions after they and Sky did a deal to get ITV Player on its platform.

It could very well be the case that UKTV wanted all four channels on DTT, at the time, FTA on DSAT and Sky met them more than half way to allow release for three in return for keeping Dave SD pay for longer. Who knows? I really would love to be a fly on the wall at some of these meetings over in Osterley to hear what gets discussed between each party.

Did Dave (or whatever it's previous name/s were) start it's life after the other three that went FTA on satellite?

Just thinking that maybe it ends later than the others simply because it started later??

Dave was called UKG2 for a while, they all started life back in the 1990's. UK Gold was the first followed by UK Living, someone like Jimbo will be able to give you all the previous names and launch dates.

The station that is now Dave was originally called "UK Gold Classics" between October 1998 and the end of March 1999. Then it was UK Gold 2, then UKG2, then Dave.

Can't remember when the names changed though. There was a +1 of UK Gold 2 so for a while that channel sounded more like an equasion - UKTVG2+1!

UK Gold Classics was the first rebrand or closure (or however you want to look at it) on Sky Digital.

Hope that helps.

UK Gold started life on the 1st November 1992, on Astra 1B, Transponder 23, Frequency 11.553 Ghz, Horizontal Polarity, Soft Scrambled in Videocrypt. I used to get a lot of sparklies on UK Gold due to Astra 1B suffering from Satellite Drift. UK Living started up on the 1st September 1993, On Astra 1C, Transponder 34, Frequency 10.979 Ghz Vertical Polarity, Hard Scrambled in Videocrypt, both joined the Sky Multi Channels Package from 1st September

UK Gold 2 became UKG2 in late 2003 (November?) then UKTV G2 in March 2004 as part of the network-wide (UKTV Gold, UKTV Style et al) rebranding. G2 became Dave around October 2007, the day after UKTV Bright Ideas closed, and so reaches its 10th anniversary as Dave next year. Innit flown?
