I love this genre. Just loved the tunes . Anyone enjoy this? Remember Silent Circle, Modern Talking, and Bad Boys Blues? So many wonderful artists during this era.

I love it and still listen to the Italo Boot Mix CD's. My favourites are Sandra ( Cretu), Modern Talking, Blue System and Systems In Blue.

It went through a bit of a resurgence in late 90s Netherlands, and informed a lot of the early 2000s electroclash scene, and came back again more recently in the last few years' disco revival.

For those who haven't heard already, the Mixed Up In The Hague mixes linked below are seminal to the reappraisal of Italo being one of the foundations of modern house music, both predominately made with Italo tracks from the 80s, but with a bit of electro, early house and modern Italo influenced stuff thrown in:

https://www.mixcloud.com/lascivit/i-...e-hague-vol-2/

Also, for those who thought this kind of thing wasn't around anymore, it's worth checking out Heartbreak, Alden Tyrell, Lindstrom and Todd Terje for a modern take on the sound, listed from most faithful to just influence by

I prefer the originals, so i check them out on youtube though once in a while i'll listen to the updated ones with some electro and early modern italo.

I will always have a soft spot for the Italo Disco genre because it gave us Black Box 'Ride On Time' and Starlight 'Numero Uno'.

I've literally just discovered via Wikipedia both songs were produced by the same people using different stage names!!!

That is not unusual.

LOL!!!

I know many other DJs/producers have used different stage names. I only discovered this when I Googled to see if it was Starlight or Star Light (couldn't remember off the top of my head) and Black Box was the first result shown.

surely Black Box and Starlight were italo-house? Italo-disco is a different genre

Synth and Euro-Pop seems to get the naff tag nowadays but with groups such as Gazebo, Human League, The Cure and New Order I'd argue it is as innovative and timeless as any genre.

Agreed. This was a great time and I loved this music. Still have stacks of 12" vinyl lovingly bought at Tricky Dickie's underneath the Indian clothes shop just off Charing Cross Road! Just a few names: Steve Allen, E.G. Daily, Barbara Doust, Lime, Eria Fachin, Sisley Ferre, Ken Lazlo, Spagna... Totally forgotten today though.

Barbara Doust had a really good song in the early 1990's called If You Love Somebody.

I love Spagna and also the group Fun Fun that I think she had something to do with. Their 1980s hit Baila Bolero is very good.

Theres an (admittedly fine line) in italo disco/synth pop, where the sometimes out of tune vocals, naive lyrics and synth becomes... just NAFF:
Ken Lazlo, Blue System, Sabrina, Modern Talking after 1987, Scotch, Miko Mission etc, its a long curtain call...

However, there is a flip side to the genre, which reveals some real treasures, especially if you want to start from the original 'italo' disco phase of the late 70's.

Try out Azoto - any all of their stuff, but pay special attention to the album DISCO FIZZ (1979), its all there. Amazing synth flourishes, arpeggios a plenty, naive vocals sung in the highest key which , though sung in English - still need to be translated!
La Bionda - Made several albums, but the first two contain early italo - try the tracks Deserts From Mars, Sandstorm, One For You & Bandido
Vivien Vee - again first 3 albums have some real treasures hidden ...

Basically, if you stick to most work touched by Celso Valli, Claudio Simonetti & Mauro Malavasi up until 1984 your fairly safe.

Its a really interesting genre which has very long tentacles.... SAW productions wouldn't exist without its synth pop template. Yes. It has alot to answer for...!

Oh yeah! Easy Going! Macho are another interesting group. I've only recently started trying out Lucio Battisi material - I have the illustrious Roisin Murphy to thank for that thru her e.p. she put out in 2014 called 'Mi Senti' where she took Italian songs & put a modern electronic spin on them. i you haven't heard, try her glacial electronic version of 'Ancora Tu', she takes it to a whole new place. I'm discovering Mina too, who's pretty effin mind-blowing.

Nice to see a thread championing this rich niche genre.

Lime - You're my magician

High pitched squeaky vocals sung with heartfelt conviction against a throbbing bell-end of a beat! love it!
