The way all the Carters have reacted to Lee's "City Job" as if he is Gordon Gekko/the Wolf of Walford is completely unrealistic; even if Mick, Linda and Whitney are naïve/stupid enough to believe that Lee has at least a management role on no experience, Johnny is supposed to be studying law at University and therefore intelligent enough to realise that the stereotypical "City Jobs" like stock-brokers or investment bankers require at least a degree.
Lee obviously feels that he has to live up to the expectations of his family, but it seems to me that he has made it worse for himself by not explaining at the beginning what his new job. Whitney and his parents would have been just as proud of him for getting a job.”
The only way that I can rationalise this is that all through the advert and interview stage Lee was fed salary figures, including commission, for the
top salespeople, told that's what he
could be achieving and he's not questioned it. Thus he's assumed that's normal and that he'll easily make enough sales to bring in a decent salary, so the family's assumptions wouldn't become an issue. He hadn't considered that those figures weren't what most people were likely to get or that getting the sales might not be easy. Obviously he knows now.
What's more I'd assume he's currently working in some kind of probationary period, say three months or six months, during which time he can be let go if he's not performing. That point can't be far away, given he's at the very bottom of the sales table, has already lied about being sick and lost his temper in the middle of the office.
