Hello, please can anyone help me with the following ? I have searched through postings within the forum about this error but they seem a little out of date, just wondered if there is a cure for this.

I have the Panasonic DMR-EX773EB DVD recorder and I've had no problem with it until today. Basically I am trying to copy recordings from the hard drive to DVD-R discs but after a few seconds a message appears saying there may be a problem with the disc and the unit turns to standby, restarts with another message saying the operation was stopped due to a scratched disc, dirt or quality. This cannot be the case, they are brand new, some of the packet have worked ok on another recorder I have in the house. The error code U88 appears in the LED display.

I have seen in an earlier posting that resetting the unit to its factory settings may help, the hard drive is full of recorded material and I am concerned I will lose it all should I reset it. Many thanks for your time, any advice would be greatly appreciated

It could just be a faulty blank disc. The machine will try to reset and re intitialize the disc and sit there going in circles.
Turn the machine off; then in standby/ off mode, press eject to get the disc out of the tray without starting up the machine, otherwise itll keep on trying to reset.
Then close the tray, unplug once again, plug back in and once its settled down, try a fresh disc. Its hard drive wont wipe your programmes.

It could be the laser is either dirty or on it's way out so can't burn the disc correctly. You could try cleaning the laser and see if that makes any difference. Preferably by taking the unit apart and using a very lightly dampened cotton bud to wipe the laser lens then polish off with a dry bud. Failing that a cleaning disk might work.

But if the laser is wearing out then ultimately the only solution is to replace the laser. Lasers do degrade over time and the power output can fall off. When that happens there might not be enough power to properly burn the disc even though reading is OK.

Get another Panasonic DVD/HDD Recorder and check if the disc works there.

I had a similar problem where the DVD Drive wouldn't read the disc, so I got another Recorder and the disc worked fine.

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for all of your replies, they are very much appreciated. I've taken the unit apart and given the spindle and lens a good clean and amazing just how dirty they were. This is going to sound ridiculous but I cannot get the actual DVD player back together again, the lid has a couple of silver clips that suggest they must slot into the player somewhere but I cannot see where! Anyone familiar with this, I thought it would be just a case of replacing the lid but obviously not
