I have bought Panasonic and Toshiba video/DVD combis in the past,
but it seems they have this display of "self check" and then totally fail.
Any one else have/had this problem?

VCR / DVD combis seemed to be far less reliable than standalone devices were.

In all seriousness, they're old technology now - probably not worth worrying about.
