I am hoping this storyline leads to Roy splitting up with Cathy. She is so irritating and should have never been paired with the magnificent Roy

She seems to get more irritating by every passing episode. Wonder if this is being done so (if) Roy calls off the wedding viewers won't care and side with him.

I'd have said Mary and Brian, although I don't remember any connection previously, although Brian was with Julie for most of that time.

I wonder if we're going to get Roy and Brian both fighting off Mary?

In reality, though, I can't really see Roy bothering to look for somebody else for the foreseeable after all the hassles with Cathy (assuming they do split up, of course).

Does Roy leave? if he is going to leave, that would be a good reason for it, falling out and not been able to see eye to eye with Cathy

Roy's face when he was looking at the countdown to the wedding clock said it all really.

Yep get rid of two awful characters together, as long as they don't forget to take Alex with them too.

I don't even mind Cathy the character that much & would have been quite happy for Roy to have had her as a friend & companion but to integrate her into his whole life & start a romance with talk of marriage so soon after Hayley feels like a violation of the Roy we have all known, loved & invested our feelings in for all these years!!

Quite simply a man like Roy would have been fundamentally incapable of allowing himself to move on from the trauma of Hayley's illness & death within this time frame, let alone be thinking about replacing his one true soulmate so quickly!!

As I say Cathy for me is quite a positive & likeable character in herself & I like Alex & how he & Roy have bonded, but romance & marriage to Roy, no thanks!!

I quite like Cathy. I'm getting bored now with Roy's reluctance/inability to do anything she wants. I know he is different and the relationship with Hayley was a special thing but he proposed to Cathy and he suggested setting the date. Now he wants to make it all about himself. Bryan was right. He should make her feel special and stop putting a damper on everything. If he doesn't want to marry her he should tell her and stop dithering and stringing her along.

Bryan and Cathy would be a better pairing.

There's no chemistry between them, not to enough to get married anyhow.
Can't a man and woman just be friends?

Perhaps that's why Kate has brought Bryan back into the show!! They would be a good match actually!!
I don't, as I say, dislike Cathy at all & she can be quite sweet with Roy, as she was eventually last night!! It's Roy's whole persona from the whole time we have known him that is the sticking point to him moving straight into another relationship & marriage like this!! It just isn't Roy & yes I agree, being the person he is he wouldn't be able to go along with things as he is, he's way too honest & straightforward for that!!

Roy should be honest with Cathy. He's coming across worse than her in this. Spineless oddball.

It makes you wonder just how well Cathy knows the man she's about to marry, with all the talk of discos and horse-drawn carriages.

Anyone who knows Roy would realise that all of that is so far removed from what he would want and from who he is, so it's just another factor in the mis-matching of these two characters.

I don't mind Cathy but not with Roy. Like most couples in Coronation Street, there is zero chemistry between them.

Sadly, I find that last sentence hard to argue with!!
For a show that once prided itself on strong couples, the current lot are pretty diabolical!!

Sally & Tim yes, Beth & Kirk maybe, but who else?
Only other two long term couples I can think of are Ty/Fiz & Ches/Sinead, neither of which 'do it' for me at all!!

I hope Brian hasn't been brought back just to force a pairing between him and someone else whether it's Cathy, Mary or whoever. Soaps work so much better when relationships develop organically based on the actors' chemistry. They don't work when the writers just decide that so and so should be together, hence Roy and Cathy, Peter and Carla, Steve and Michelle, Nick and Carla, Anna and Kevin.

Relationships need time to develop to be believable and that demands chemistry, so whilst I doubt that Sally and Tim were originally intended to be together, there's chemistry there and it works really well. Ditto with Roy and Hayley, Ken and Deirdre, Jack and Vera, Stan and Hilda, Steve and Karen, David and Kylie.....

I agree with all of this..

I think Roy and Cathy would work better as the sort of platonic partnership that Rita and Norris have. I could even see them as flatmates but the romance just doesn't ring true for me. It does seem that Roy has compromised, or been pushed into make changes he wasn't ready for, more than Cathy.

Roy is most comfortable with the familiar and his set routines - knowing everything is in its place and B follows A, makes it easy for him to deal with the unexpected; when something terrible happens to his friends and neighbours (and this is Soap, it happens a lot), Roy can be relied on for the pragmatic advice/ practical help where he can because his day to day can almost be done on autopilot. As they did when Hayley wanted to kill herself, the writers are using this inflexibility to make him seem unreasonable in the face of Cathy's wants especially as she is more expressive emotionally.

I also agree with the post about Corrie's romantic couples lacking Chemistry apart from Sally and Tim and I would definitely say Kirk and Beth have chemistry too. I think Steve and Michelle used to have some chemistry - it wasn't a grand passion like Steve and Karen (or even Steve and Becky at first) had but it was nice and believable. Well, until the writers decided that the only way they could show Michelle as "feisty" was for her to constantly put Steve down and bully him while everyone said how lucky he was to have her.

Rita and Norris and Mary and Dev also have buckets of "platonic" chemistry - the characters work really well together but wouldn't if they were romantically involved.

Didn't it just. I so hope he gets rid of stupid Cathy and just builds on his friendships with Mary, and now the Rubbish tzar (can't remember his name!)

Roy should be left as a loner, with some close friends. I hope he finishes with the irritating Kathy and that she disappears into the twilight, with Alex.
