I think it's realistic for London living spaces. Lee and Whitney could never afford a proper flat, and many young couples there either live in share houses or tiny studio flats like that.

Yes, it looked like a studio flat, which is still pushing it in terms of realism for £750 a month in East London, but at least it makes a little more sense. There's no way they'd have got even a one-bedroom flat for that sort of price.

googled some prices, Stratford area - one bedroom start at 1100 but would say the average is just around 1400 pcm. Studio flats same area - most of them just below 1000 pcm. Being a studio flat they might just as well have stayed and saved some money.
Is that figure e.g. £750 min all in? Surely, council tax, utilities, etc would be additional wouldn't it? Also, what about food, transport to Walford, spending money etc? I know this is the plot and having a very realistic breakdown isn't in keeping with a storyline like this which is essentially a combo of a young newly married couple, depression, breaking away from a strong family unit and getting by in London but really, the producers are trying to knock a square peg into a hole and need to simplify the story.
Just seems to be adding more layers the longer this is dragged out and as mentioned previously, Mick and Linda appear to have a complete misunderstanding of their son who has dropped out of the army going into a new job in which he has no qualifications or relevant experience. Surely, his lack of confidence and difficult personal circumstances should raise alarm bells?

I was quite pleased to see it was a studio flat as it was much more realistic, both in price and the amount of soace Jack had to convert into flats.
It also made Whitney seem a lot less demanding re her going on about a new place constantly. She wasn't asking for the moon aftee all.

I would think utilities would be on top although it is possible gas, electricity and water is included if Jack didn't want the hassle of installing multiple metres. He might just have worked out an average where everybody is charged the same via a service charge. A lot of blocks of flats do that, even if individually privately owned. It looked to be pre furnished as well. So £750 pcm is a very hood deal and should ne more than manageable for a couple if they were both working, especially if one had a reasonabke City job so paying at least high twenties per annum and they didn't go nits re going out, eating steak each.night.
But of course Lee is mostly commission basted and not hitting his targets so he'll be lucky to be bringing home minimum wage, plus paying back that loan so it's all doomed.

The sums just don't add up. He would have paid £1,500 for the deposit and presumably he would have had to pay a month's rent in advance unless that would have been included.
He may have had a bit of dough as wedding presents but how much would he have stolen? There seems a bit of conjecture that he's still working and his maligned supervisor may actually be more lenient with Lee than we have given him credit for considering he's habitually been at the bottom of the league table, isn't particularly committed and has kicked off on the floor. He's on probation so could go at any given moment and then what?

Every rented place I've ever lived, the deposit has been equivalent to one month's rent. So as the rent was £750, Lee would probably have had to pay £1,500 to Jack in total.

I don't think we should be reading to much into the costs of the various rents in Albert Square (especially the figure mention by Martin and Stacey for their new house was £500) - realistically, I don't think any of the characters could afford to live there.
Lots of people, in my opinion, seem to have missed that Whitney's been pushing for a place of their own because she wanted a bit of privacy for them - they've mentioned the thin walls in the Vic several times - and to be away from Linda's well meant and loving interference.

He got 2 or 3 grand from that loan he got online. But he's going to run out pretty quickly. He is so thick.

I don't think I explained myself, I thought that was the whole deposit - £750 plus another £750 for the first rent. Have I got that wrong then?

Not sure why this idea of them moving up to Bradford fell through. Was it because a job for Lee didn't materialise or Mick & Linda managed to convince them because of Lee's depression that he needed to be close to them? Accommodation's far less up north than the East End of course.

Is Linda aware of Lee's depression though? According to the upcoming s/l, the family are left reeling because they didn't realise what a bad way he was in.
