He seems a horrible man.. as long as he gets his money, no understanding.. he seems like the type of man who'd evict a woman with a child who is just a month in debt..

I don't think he's a slum landlord at all. The bedsit looks nice and well decorated. Rent is good too.
Jack is a business man what do you expect him to do?

It's just his attitude, like when mild-mannered Lee said to him they might not be able to afford the flat, he got really arsey about it.. there's just no need for that when you are rolling in dosh you can afford to be more understanding.

He's an utterly charmless, dislikeable, opportunistic individual but judging who his ex wife is and the mess she frequently finds herself in not to mention her dependency on her psychopathic sister, I can just about abide him.

He's clearly been shafted before like with Kyle and Martin with the bogs so it's understandable he's grown some and isn't prepared to be strung along as Lee was trying to do with him about his verdict.

A slum landlord with well decorated flats at very reasonable prices?

Quite.

I generally can't stand Jack and find his morals questionable to say the least but so far there is nithing to suggest he'll be a bad landlord.

He didnt appear to cut corners with the conversion, hiring proper builders, sparks and plumbers to do the work rather than DIY. The fixtures and fittings look reasonable, it's clean, the rent is competitive, he doesn't appear to ha e adked for extortionate deposits or made them sign an unfair lease..

To me, a 'slum' landlord is one that refuses to properly maintain their properties so the tenants are living in dirty, cold, unsafe conditions and who has taken such a big deposit or worded the lease in such a way that the tenant can't afford to move out.

Re how he spoke to Lee. As fas as he.knows Lee has a good, well paid job and had been stringing him along when he could have been showing it to other prospective tenants. The flat costs him money every day it is empty and Lee saying he wanted it and then changing his mind was letting him down.

Even with all that money Jack still can't buy a personality.

Plus didn't his previous tenants do a flit so it's understandable why he might be a bit peed off at being messed about.

I feel dirty standing in his corner though, because he is a tosser generally.

Yes, I'm not sure if they'd moved in or not but the original tenants had let him down already so he was testy.

I know, I don't like defending him either😡

Really? Since when did landlords become charities?

Indeed. I've never been a Jack fan but since his return he's been more unlikeable than ever. The only time I find him bearable to watch is in scenes with little Ricky, and that's because of Ricky rather than him.

Only time will tell. A lot of landlords fall down when it comes to maintenance once they've got themselves a tenant. When he's nice and snug in his new house he could well lose interest in them beyond raking in the rent. It happens a lot around here....rentals are left to fall into disrepair.

Does anyone remember the bedsits that Minty used to manage? I think at various times Pat, Billy, Janine and Laura all lived in the building. They were more slum type housing; nasty grubby, badly maintained places.

Isn't Jack offering Lee and Whitney a slightly reduced rent as he knows them and sees them as reliable after the original tenants let him down? The studio flat is small - but all studios are - and the work has been done to a good standard. Albert Square may not be the most glamorous place in the world, but a slum would stand out there and the new flats don't.

For a studio flat in London, £750 a month is good.

EE's based of Fossett Square in Hackney - average rent for a Studio flat in Hackney - according to Google is £305 a week (£1220 a month) so Jack's either giving them a 39.5% discount or his rents are low.

Now where have I seen Jack being called a slum landlord before

Oh but yeah he has made as many small flats as he can to get the most out of it.

My god Max just used that space for a living room/diner. When he had money troubles h could have just put up plasterboard and rented it out. I wonder if the ex kitchen is another flat. Pokey but cosy

It's a very reasonable price for the upcoming East End. Why doesn't Whit get off her copious behind and get a steady admin job to help Lee instead off preening herself and doing her bloody nails? It actually only needs her to earn a couple of hundred a week. Surely she should get the hint that she needs to muck in.

Exactly

I'm never going to defend landlords that don't play fair (maintenance, rent hikes without due notice etc), and don't like the buying up multiple properties making it harder to get on the housing ladder or affordable rent. But...it is Thierry business, their livelihood. Why should they have to write off rent arrears? Let's not kid ourselves that there aren't tenants that take advantage, don't take care of properties and rely on how difficult and expensive it is to chase up arrears and evict if it comes to that.

As Vald says, the proof will be in how he manages them as problems arise such as boiler malfunctions.
