My aunt had a pet Turtle (not sure how old) and it hibernated in a small shoe box as it did every year, but when she opened to check on him, his head had completely fallen off....dead (obviously).

I appreciate this is a totally random thread but it was a story my mum recited to me and I often wonder if that is actually possible. is this a common thing to happen to turtles? Or tortoise maybe?

Well you're the fool. They don't shed their heads, they shed their body, shell and everything... every year.

It's a fairly common occurrence in tortoises and other testudines. It even has a name - chelonii cranial drop syndrome. Zoologists are not certain what causes it but the current thinking is that it is due to a recessive gene in combination with a calcium poor diet that results in degradation of the bone structure. It is advised to mix chalk powder with your tortoises normal food for several weeks prior to packing them away for the winter. Alternatively you can preemptively wrap sellotape (other brands available) around your pets neck to prevent any potential drop.

Walking around extremely slowly like a headless tortoise just doesn't have the same ring to it!

I must admit that in my whole life up to read this thread, I never even knew that the turtle's head falling off thing even happened.

I have to admit, even if that happened to my own pet turtle I'd still find it impossible to resist impersonating Scottish Mike Myers - "I got a tortle's heeeeed poppin oot."

It's pretty cruel to keep a turtle in a shoebox without any water. Are you sure that it wasn't a tortoise?

I think it may have chewed its own head off. Check the neck for chew marks.

They can wake up early from hibernation, want a snack and turn round to find the nearest bite of food - their own neck.
