The OP might well be onto something - just saw this thread on the Broadcasting board.

Maybe we can carry on from where we left off with our lives before we found this forum my son should be about 10 now, it would be nice to see him
He's 32 actually and living in New Zealand with a wife and triplets - one of each.

No, it is definitely Twitter that is closing and DS is staying.

This will mean DS will go on to even greater things, as every Twitter user will then flock to DS to share their enthralling 140 character posts such as "delete your account", "Shat on rooney" and 80% of DS users will then be so confused they'll think they're Alice Webster.

It's quite a while since I've been on the AV site, so I thought I'd wander across and have a look. Well, it's like those old films where the introverted librarian, the one wearing spectacles and her hair done up in a bun, throws away the specs, lets her hair down, and becomes a raving beauty! Some change!
I have an account there that I haven't used for years. I did have a poke around (without logging in!) a while back and was amused to see that the notorious chief super moderator (or something like that) ianj now appears as a banned user. Anyone else remember him?

That's dumb, what do they want to do something like that for?

Oh well, I'm just glad they didn't stop before this suymmer.

I'll be quite sad in a sort of gooey sentimental kind of way if the forums closed. I joined the same month I started high school 9 years ago and I'm still knocking around while I'm in my final year at university. I more or less grew up with this place.

Although I'll be honest, since I've discovered booze and girls I haven't posted as much

Hahaha!

1. Digital Spy is a business and it's evidentially not making enough money to justify its costs and make a proportional profit.
2. Our separate ways. Other forums, Twitter, Facebook survivors' groups, Usenet, Daily Mail comments, etc.
Good Lord, shoot me now!

Good Lord, shoot me now!

Perhaps a secret contact in Buckingham Palace told him.
Paul Burrell never could lie convincingly!

Apparently .... The owners of a well known "tech" forum sent a "Request to Comment" email out to their mods telling them that an established "UK forum" had sent an unsolicited email informing them that they are closing its doors. No names were mentioned (in the post I saw) but it all points to DS.

What was being offered was ridiculous cheap "advertising" by having the "tech forum" mentioned in a banner when people visited the site. The "tech forum" was offered the choice to have its name mentioned either alone (at a higher cost), or with other none tech forums.

I have dates.
The advert would have been shown in "two weeks" (although I don't know when the email was sent!). I guess this would tie in with a closure announcement.

The forum would close on 1st Jan (this does not ring true! businesses close as soon as they know they wont make money, they don't wait for a nice round time).

The "advert" would be live for one year while the site is mothballed.

Reading between the lines it seems that DS offered to sell the site (but not its name) two months ago. The owners of avforums rejected it
I can quite well believe some of this is true, I know a former mod who is in contact with current mods and he said much or less the same thing.

At least mintbro will have one less password to worry about.

On a serious note, I posted on another thread that if I were running DS, I would pull the plug without notice. This isn't only on moral grounds, but to prevent a final day of thousands of people posting thousands of angry, offensive and libellous messages (well you gotta avva laff, incha) not caring about bans or consequences. Like the last day of school.
Somehow I think the mods are already resigned to the demise of the forums because I have noticed things being said that would earn a holiday going unchecked.

I could certainly see that happening as almost an "F You" to all of the people who use adblockers and who, arguably, have prevented the forum from making enough money to keep it going but i don't think it would be as severe as that personally.

I'd like to think that they'd at least leave the forums active long enough to let people find another place to go.

Are all the posts also archived in sites like the Wayback Machine? Really wouldn't be good to lose them.

I have used Adblock but I did that more as a last resort to stop ads that were causing the browser to freeze/crash/, if they didn't do that, I wouldn't have bothered. Ads were getting full of Flash, full video and audio and causing pages to crash, not respond.

Looking at the wayback machine for an old version of DS, a lot of it is archived but i'm not so sure the actual posts are as well - i've clicked around a few of the links and nothing seems to come up

i had to start using an adblock when they started with the creepy autoplay videos with some disembodied voice greeting you.

the overly obtrusive adverts were making the site unusable because they were obscuring the pages if they loaded but mostly they were constantly crashing my browser.

if the forum disappears because people are using blockers they only have themselves to blame because the world and his uncle were complaining about and discussing it repeatedly and the ds response was largely ignore and delete.

it`s the internet, there are plenty of other places to go.

Apparently it has been announced on a thread in politics that the forums are gone in five days, the news was first broken by channel four apparently

i think they are referring to the closure of the channel 4 boards.

[though i`m open to correction.]

As Fairy Princess mentioned JW, sleeping dogs could be an option.

That seems to be an intresting forum.

I've just read it and it was indeed referring to the C4 News forums.

Thing is, in a perfect world you'd have a mod actually saying something or at least keeping us in the loop but then they've got a long history of ignoring their users so I really can't imagine anything happening and we'll either get a sticky thread appear one day saying the forums are closing or we'll just turn up one day and they'll be gone.

The (other) thing is, i do get why they're probably not saying much at the moment though because it would descend in to a free-for-all here and it would very likely end up having them close the forums a lot earlier because it would be a lot easier than trying to moderate all the "hilarious" libellous threads.

I know I said earlier i didn't think it would be that bad but that's only if the forum had 24 hours notice. If they announced that the forum was closing in a week or a fortnight, i do think it would be that bad here.

As Fairy Princess mentioned JW, sleeping dogs could be an option.

That seems to be an intresting forum.
Nah, I wouldn't go there, although i'd probably be bloody minded enough to go there for the short term because i've been told I "wouldn't last five minutes" there, so i'd certainly have fun disproving that notion.

It wouldn't be because of the many things they've said about me over the years either, because that bothers me about as much as an itchy arse would but ultimately, I wouldn't go there because, to be respectful to them, the feel of their forum and style of posting just isn't for me.

Thing is though, apart from digital spy "downsizing" and one mod saying there are no current plans to close the forums, the rest is pure supposition.

That said, DS has enjoyed extraordinary longevity, and indeed, nothing does last forever.

So we'll have to wait and see. At the moment, speaking factually, nobody has a clue one way or the other.
