Did anybody else notice how shaky the camera was in EE last night?

It didn't stop moving. It was actually quite annoying. Was it supposed to be like that, or did one of the camera crew have the shakes.

People on the episode thread were talking about it but I didn't really notice. Quite often TV shows employ this technique when they want to give a more realistic feel to what's happening on screen. It may be a new stylistic decision that SOC has made.

I noticed this and wondered if it was a new thing in terms of direction. A lot of it looked like it was shot on steadicam.

I kept thinking last night that maybe they're trying to make it more realistic by not having the camera perfectly still when filming. That technique is also sometimes used in big dramatic scenes as well, but I didn't find it off putting, if anything it made the episode better.

I was distracted by it too. Very noticeable.

It's because Phil was holding the camera.

I agree, I generally prefer that style as I tend to associate it with grittier productions. Don't get me wrong, if it was going full on Blair Witch Style shakiness, I would find it a bit odd, but I think the handheld style suits EE more than the static images.

It's something a lot of the other soaps do as well. Hollyoaks does it when they have high drama scenes as does Corrie. Brookside filmed in this way as well in the final year and it does tend to add more of a realistic and dramatic edge to the scenes and episodes as a whole. I agree it does suit EE, just as long as it doesn't go to OTT or anything as then you tend to focus on the shakiness of the camera more than the actual scene.

When there were far distance shots (opposite of close ups can't remember what they're called) and th camera was shaking I got the impression it was someone watching, like what they did when Ronnie was being stalked. Thought it was an early set up for Max, particularly as ee release press about a return or introduction in line with the preparation of that storyline on screen, such as Denise finding out about someone using her house as their address on screen at the same time Jordans return was released as spoilers.

The camera angles depend on the director, most have a similar style but every so often there will be someone who does things a bit differently. When Bryan Kirkwood was at EastEnders there was a Hollyoaks director who did a few episodes of EE, it looked really odd because it was being shot like Hollyoaks.

It's a steadicam.

The director would have chosen to shoot the episode with it rather than the traditional multi camera set-up.

It was different. I kinda liked the shots, he puts us in places of the rooms we've never been before - but the 'shakiness' was off putting at times.

Rick Platt was the director, according to IMDB it was TV directorial debut. I'll wait and see what the other episodes are like before I put my foot down on whether I liked it or not.
