Seems that they are not a patch of what is offered in the US and looks like they never will be. Have you ever bought Apple TV? If so, what are your thoughts?

Yes I own a 3rd gen and a 4th gen Apple Tv, great for Netflix and iTunes, picture and audio good too with the 4th gen capable of 7.1 sound, but as you say the app store for the 4th gen is sadly lacking support in the UK.

I do use the 4th gen to access my ripped movies and tv shows I have stored on my NAS for the Infuse app available in the app store.

To be honest the 3rd gen is an excellent unit that i would suggest to people if they just want Netflix and iTunes in 1080p and 5.1 sound.

The 4th gen has the touch remote which some love and some hate but no 4k support if that is important.

Have first, second and third generation units but only using the latter now. Unless you want to purchase movies from Apple or want to easily connect Apple devices to your TV then they have limited use. I also use the Third gen one when travelling as it will set up its own network between it and an iPad or iPhone to replay movies etc stored on them. Third gen not sold new by Apple anymore but occasionally come up in their refurb section.

There are a number of apps availble in the US which are for US services such as Hulu and HBO that would not be applicable in the UK. However Amazon is missing both in the US and UK and millions are being inconvenienced by having to buy another set top box/stick which has the app. Apple isn't the only box that doesn't have the Amazon app and it just makes no sense as you surely want to encourage as many people as possible to sign up to the Prime instant service which will bring in vastly more in revenue than one of sales of a stick/box.

I have bought (and sold on) both Apple 3 and 4, I was disappointed by the main UK apps (apart from BBC iPlayer) being missing. The remote on the 4 isn't very user friendly in my opinion, more design over substance. Also streaming paid for content via the itunes store is more expensive than some of the others out there.

I think the best unit for UK streaming is the Roku 3, it has pretty much everything you need for most choice. Netflix, Amazon, BBC, ITV, 4, 5, & Now TV plus loads of other stuff. Plus its a lot cheaper than Apple TV.

Having said that I also quite like Amazon Fire TV - which has other skills available to it!

Of course Amazon want more people than o sign up for their service which is why Apple, and some others, don't have the App as it competes with their service.

It is not Apple who are refusing to have an app on their box nor is it other popular media players such as Nvidia Shield and in any case Apple do not have a competing video streaming service with Amazon. If Amazon want more people to sign up to their streaming service then they should make it available on as many boxes and sticks as possible. Compare it with Netflix which is on everything including Apple.

It is not just Amazon, the same applies to SKY's Now TV. It is absurd considering Amazon and SKY are trying to build a subscriber base to compete with Netflix. Ask yourself this question If you want to watch The Grand Tour and you had an Apple TV would you feel okay about having to go out and buy another box as well as paying for the streaming service? Or do you think hey I want to watch a Marvel series on Netflix but that's okay I already have that app on my TV, my set top box, my playstion, my media centre oh and my Amazon Fire stick.

We have a 3 in the bedroom and a 4 on the main tv. If you have a large media collection, you can install Plex on the apple tv. Plex will also allow the addition of ITV player (minus those annoying adverts). If you want to flop on the sofa and watch Family Guy, the programmes come up as a list. Start with the first episode and it auto plays the next one for you.

Another plus point for Plex outside of AppleTV. There is now an option on Sonos for your music collection through your Plex server.

Bundle in a NowTV subscription and you can stream Sky One, Sky Atlantic and a few others, plus all the box sets.

You can airplay Amazon Prime to the AppleTV from an iPhone or docked iPad - a clumsy way of doing it but a workaround for now.

I've been debating for a while if I should get an Apple TV or not but honestly the apps for the UK (or lack of) is putting me off. But the main reason is I'm not sure if it is worth it. As I've already got a smart TV to watch Netflix on and I have Sky demand which is where I watch BBC iplayer etc. I've only got a couple of TV series on the app store. I would love to wirelessly stream my macbook to the TV (I use an hdi cable at present) but it seems too pricey for not enough features.

Which apps are available in the US that you can use in the UK?

On another forum someone complained about the lack of a Hulu app in the UK but Hulu is a US service so there is no point in it being available in the UK and Hulu wouldn't want people accessing their service through VPN.

Amazon Fire has both Netflix and Amazon but doesn't have Now TV, Now TV doesn't have Amazon, it;s an absolute mess all people want is to buy the best set top box, stick or media player that offers them the best performance and can access all of their media and those with existing boxes such as Youview, Sky etc don't want to buy another box but may want to subscribe to the streaming services.

You will take Crossy Road and you will like it.

I've got an Apple tv 4, not sure it was worth it, although funnily enough in my experience it runs Now tv far more smoothly than the Now tv box I have does.

How does Apple Tv compare to something like the Roku 3 in terms of app availability UK catchup etc?

If you just want to wirelessly stream your Mac, an AppleTV 3rd gen would do the trick. You might still be able to pick one up second hand or refurbished.

Roku has more apps than Apple TV that one is likely to use in the UK including Amazon ofcourse.

Apple TV UK apps:
BBC iPlayer
Now TV
Netflix
TV Player

Roku UK apps
BBC iPlayer
ITV Player
All 4
Demand 5
Now TV
Netflix
Prime

Amazon Fire TV UK apps
BBC iPlayer
ITV Player
All 4
Demand 5
UKTV Play
TV Player
Netflix
Prime

Basically, the Apple TV doesn't yet cut it. The Fire TV has the best range of apps but misses the all important Now TV. The Roku has my favourite UI right now, but misses UKTV Play and TVPlayer.
