It looks like he's in a happy relationship and living relatively open to his friends, family and teammates. By being pictured with a woman now and then, helps to reassure all the men out there who wear his shirts and buy his products. Ronaldo's got plenty of fans living in countries where being gay isn't just unexceptable, it's illegal. It also wouldn't surprise me if Real Madrid have it written in his contract that he's got to keep quiet about it. |

Is there any celebrity who hasn't been rumoured to be gay? Seems like every relationship is comes with "beard", "obviously gay" comments.

Could've sworn I read a story recently where he admitted to being gay, when someone yelled homophobic abuse at him. Or was it just a jokey comeback?
As for him wanting to stay in the closet, do people really not realise how homophobic many football fans are? I wouldn't blame him for not coming out. |

![]() I mean, are Nike hysterically homophobic? Or would they perhaps love the endless publicity they would get out of it? |

As for him wanting to stay in the closet, do people really not realise how homophobic many football fans are? I wouldn't blame him for not coming out. Exactly. He hasn't just got to play in Spain - where he'd get enough stick - but all over Europe (Champions league/Internationals). Imagine the abuse he would get in Russia, for instance? The problem footballers have is that they are completely exposed to it. They're not shielded in a racing car, or up on a diving board in a well behaved atmosphere. I mean, he's already getting grief from other players!(see above)

The Spanish authorities need to send a message by giving a severe punishment to Koke. Ronaldo might also face punishment because of his threats. Not sure that they will do anything though as Spain doesn't take these issues as seriously as Britain. Insult the Pope though and they'll probably chuck you in the slammer and throw away the key!

I mean just purely based on who he is and what he does he must come into contact with hundreds of women a year in social situations and he literally could have his pick. So why no partner/wife. It's pretty obvious. Not that I've a single issue with that. Changes nothing as far as I'm concerned. |

Most studies put Spain above the UK regarding accepting homosexuality and religion hasn't been relevant in Spain for a few decades. It was grim and opressive yeah but they got away from that better and faster than any other "latin" country has. |

![]() Ronaldo was born in 1985 by when Salazar's regime was gone ten years. Yes, it takes a while for change to come about, and change is usually faster in the cities, then towns than in the countriside. But 2000, when Ronaldo was 15, that change had most certainly taken root. If anything, a great many attititudes in those countries are now ahead of those here in Britain where despite our own smug conviction that we are at some kind of cutting edge we still wallow in the past, a good example being our British obsession - as witnessed very clearly here in this thread and elsewhere on DS - with whether so and so is a bender or not and whether so and so an actress is a muff-diver (to use two unsavoury terms which rather neatly sum up British attitudes. As for Ronaldo losing loads of moolah in sponsorship, again that is a pretty unfounded claim, made, I suspect, by someone no longer in the first flush of youth. Sponsors are well aware that their market is diverse, whether they are trying to flog gym kit (goes down well with muscle marys), perfume (i.e. 'after-shave') clothes or whatever. If anything they might welcome a gay role model such as Ronaldo who might help them expand their reach and create a new 'gay' market. It's all about the loot you see. As to whether Cristiano baby is or is not, I personally don't give a flying f*ck. But this poster is way off-beam appealing to 40/50 year-old-steretypes. |

You are peddlig outdated cliches. Rather like Ireland, peviously almost slavishly Roman Catholic countries such as Spain, Portugal and Italian have take to what they regard as the tyranny of the RC church with gusto and relish. They now feel free and don't they just love it. 'Fiercely Catholic background'? My a*se.

Generally Spain isn't bad these days if you're gay, but, once you step onto the pitch.... You don't have to be a footie fan to see how fans bait & heckle players that aren't part of 'the tribe'. That would affect his concentration on the pitch. It's still very much a str8 mans world within football. I also think that for all the progressiveness you see in cities around the world - just go to the 'sticks', & you'll find bigotry alive & well. Intolerance is just a heartbeat away. Just see the US, UK & uh... France & Germany.... Its not a happy accepting world we live in! Acceptance comes & goes in cycles. |

Points above noted. The Spanish and French media outed him a year ago by claiming they were aware of Madrid's concerns over his 4 times a week trips to Morocco for "cuddles". They stopped just short of stating he's gay. I suppose he doesn't need to go public but it is leading to confusion as I heard on the radio this week some pundits going on about his gorgeous girlfriend which is misleading if it's purely platonic.

I was and am always very sceptical of, for example, extreme Russian homophobia. As Oscar Wilde observed (and he should know) 'Extreem antipathy betreays secret affinity.' When ever I see some butch as brass Rusky banging on about gays and how it undermines Mother Russia, I think 'who do you think you are kidding?'
