EE: Shoddy Camera Work
Are EE hiring 6 year olds to operate their cameras these days? I almost feel sick from tonight's episode, I questioned whether the room was spinning at one point.

I just commented exactly the same thing to my husband, what on earth is going on? Are they trying out some new style?!

Pretty atrocious, angles and movement, are the cut backs that bad that there just making people hold the camera now?!

It's been awful. Really needs to be sorted out.

This group of episodes have been done by a director who hasn't done Eastenders before. His style would be more suited to Hollyoaks I think. There are two more of his episodes to come.

It's steadicam style which is dated and apparently used to make it seem more "fly-on-the-wall". You will also notice the number of cuts in a scene has gone way up and they are using a lot fewer close-ups... all to give us the impression we are observing real people rather than watching a scripted show... doesn't work, it's dated and distracting.
I doubt a director gets to make a production decision like this, this approach has come from the top and will be abandoned as quickly... but we are going to see it for a while yet... |

Just like the horrific filmic nonsense on casualty years back, I hate the filmic look cause its not natural and incredibly tacky.

Agree about the camera work.
But there is also something going on regarding Phil's skin colour and other co stars. Billy was also looking yellow when sat at the table with Phil in the kitchen. And Sharon looks yellowish also, when sitting close to Phil. I know Phil s suppose to look that way now, but as for the others it's weird. Maybe they have a yellowish light above their heads when in a scene with Phil, to enhance his colouring further! But it effects other characters close by also. lol Anyone else seen this. ? It's not my TV every single other show, TV show e.t.c, the skin tones are good and normal looking. |

I reckon it's down to these episodes being shot by a film director who hasn't worked on EE before, and it will go back to the normal style on Tuesday.
I don't think this approach will last but it is a conscious production choise |

A spokesperson told the Radio Times: "On occasion, EastEnders will use different filming styles and techniques. This is dependent on the storyline as well as the style of each individual director."
The director of each block has more say than is implied in this thread then. Plus, we've had these sort of weeks where EE is a bit experimental with its camerawork etc before then things return to normal the following week. |

I noticed it wobbly for the first time in tonight's episode during the Linda/Lee scene with the camera shooting the scene through the milk float. I presumed they were just trying to hide Kellie's bump as best they could hence the 'dodgy' camera work. Can't say I've noticed it before tonight.

As I've said on other threads, stop with the zooming out on scenes to try and make them have an impact. It most certainly is not to do with certain directors as it is a recurring them of late.

No way. Directors are hired to direct EastEnders, not to create something different in their vision.
