Synchronicity

Is full Synchronicity or as close as the key to a good dance?. I'm no expert as I'm new to the show but Danny's Charleston appeared to have incredible timing. Throughout the series though I've stuggled to guess what constitutes a 'good performance'. To me it seems its a combination of imitation & flair. With Ed for example there seems to be a bit of a delay between his response & his partner. He definitely has flair though in form of character. I'm interested as well to know what indicates whether someone is in time or not, same with X Factor in that respect 😞.

It plays a major part for me, but I'd guess it depends on your "ear". Mine is mediocre at best for pitch, but stronger than average for rhythm, so while I wouldn't notice a singer not hitting the dead centre of a note, I do see a dancer who doesn't hit the centre of the beat and it jars every time.

I think it is rhythmic interpretation. Obviously understanding the basic rhythm and how the dance steps are performed within that rhythm is important, but a dancer should bring a certain expressiveness and individuality to their dancing by understanding when to hold a bit longer on a step or movement, and how the phrasing of the dance complements the musical phrasing. Sadly a lot of Strictly music doesn't lend itself to any of this.

In terms of delay between partners, there will sometimes be a tiny delay between the two in order for the one partner to lead the other although the follower needs to be in the right position to be led, although it shouldn't be so that the follower is being pushed around. Once they understand what the lead is telling them it is up to them to take responsibility for their movement. In the case of Ed and Katya, the lead is probably the wrong way round and there is some pushing from Katya.

I Find synchronicity is a key part, it can earn extra points from me if this is good& drop marks if poor

In Ballroom, most Amateurs and Professionals send a lot of time working on syncronicity. It means that we practice our lowering together so we lower at the same time, rise at the same time, so everything we do is together and done at exactly to same time. Two bodies moving as one.
