but it's barely started. What is unfolding of course relates to the sporting world, but looks likely to be of the same horrific magnitude as the Savile case. The difference this time is that one man's courage in coming forward last week, has had such a profound and immediate impact, that just today something unprecedented happened and three other footballers began talking tentatively, but openly, for the first time ever, on live Tv about what happened to them in the hope it would help others to come forward. Seeing their visible torment was distressing.
I think there's a lot more to come out over all this, possibly even a paedophile ring. Incidentally, where is this Bennell character? Apparently his house in Milton Keynes was raided by the police, and his dog taken away, but no mention of where he is. Has he done a runner? |

Channel 4 news this evening reported former players as saying 'the scandal surrounding this is bigger than Savile'. A reporter who approached an FA official back in 1997 simply ignored the reporter and scurried off into the building.
Four police forces are now investigating. https://www.channel4.com/news/police...se-allegations A former professional footballer here speaks about how he has only just told his family and parents. https://www.channel4.com/news/paul-s...se-allegations |

Goes back to my post about the food chain. You watch my back, I'll watch yours and we'll feed the media a couple of names, they'll concentrate on that, and we'll just go back to doing whatever the hell we want.

Well i don't think the FA are in for an easy ride on this one by a long chalk. These men aren't in the shadows or hiding behind pseudonyms and answers will not just be expected, they will be demanded. Knowing Bennells history makes certain people in certain places (you know who/what i mean), complicit and culpable.

These revelations are shocking in their way, but unsurprising. It's difficult to imagine that any youth sport, not just football, wouldn't have been targeted by paedophiles. Why? Because it's where the young people are. It has probably happened in rugby, cricket, athletics, gymnastics.... you name it.
Obviously one would hope that the perpetrators are, where guilty, found, prosecuted and punished. What nobody wants to see is the sort of witch hunt that the post-Saville revelations caused where the police went over the top at the slightest whisper, on anybody with any claim to celebrity from the 1970's like a herd of stampeding rhino By all means pursue where there are reasonable grounds for genuine concern, and give allegations due credence. Investigate with vigour where the evidence is sufficient and credible (not automatically believed "credible and true" at the whim of coppers who exceed their authority and position). The response to these allegations should be considered in the cold light of day and proportionate to their substance. it's almost like you took an idea based on prejudice of the not only the legal system but potential victims, and ran with it |

One reason its getting lots of coverage is that there is mindset in the UK that football ius beautiful, glorious, proud etc...
The news is reminding people that football is idealistic to many on a purely superficial level. Dig deeper and you'll see that it is just as filthy as any other large institute. Child victims of sex abuse think it is a crime unique to them. These survivors are speaking out on national TV to reach out to other victims to let them know they are not alone now. |

I agree with the comments about the possible scale of all this.
I think this could be "bigger than Rotherham". Maybe we will have a 90 page thread. |

There was a Celtic FC coach had up for this a couple of decades back, maybe longer. I suppose it's an ideal job for these criminals. As most jobs with access to children must be. This easier than most.

A stupid , unfair and ignorant comment from you
I am not saying it shouldn't be on the news, I said it shouldn't be continually dominating the news, when it was already known about for years |

What has been emerging during the last few years is the very serious problem of abuse (at all levels) within the UK. We as a nation have to confront it and do all that we can to try to prevent it. I watched the interviews on the Victoria Derbyshire programme yesterday...a very hard watch indeed...but what brave guys, they really are. If their 'coming out' does a great deal to prevent further abuse then what they've done (coupled with the media exposure) should be applauded.

Now some of this in terms of our legislature may be that as public school boys they had known of this. All of us are influenced by our experiences. Public feared what they didn't know and as ever ignorance prevails. Gay Rights took a massive step forward in 1960's. Sadly the campaigns got hijacked in 70's by PIE who wanted to tie their sex with children rhetoric in. Whilst those who knew better realised they were separate issues once again public in general got taken in by muddling them together. It's said gay rights lost at least a decade due this. Move forward to 21st century to even compare the two seems absurd. I so think however that we need to be careful with the very historic allegations flying around. Ted Heath for example. Likely gay rather than a paedophile. |

Yes it is said a lot by older people.
My generation , 60/70 year olds have lived withand experienced abuse and had no voice. Perhaps it's the people you associate with. |

Yes homosexual and paedophile got tangled up with each other in minds of public and also legislation during 20th century. It was the view that gay men fiddled with little boys.

As uncomfortable as it may be for people to accept, Bennell would appear to be homosexual. His sexual activities haven't involved any girls at all and his victims have all been young boys, so it's easy to see how the two get 'tangled up' to use your description. He's still a Paedophile as some of the boys he assaulted were under 11 years old. That he lives with a woman means little to me other than to camouflage his predilections which she has certainly known about as she was living with him when he last got sent to prison in 2015.
the tangling up is purely to do with prejudice and ignorance and isn't 'easy to see' at all |

by your logic heterosexuality and paedophilia should also be 'tangled up' as many victims of child sexual abuse are of the opposite gender to their abuser

Apparently he has a girlfriend.
We are used to hearing that victims of child abuse go on to lead terribly affected lives but these footballers seem to have come through the alleged incidents pretty well. They have all gone on to lead successful lives, and any affects only brought to the surface by appearing on TV shows |
