I bought myself a 5.1 home cinema system yesterday with the idea of making it my complete living room audio system by outputting both the sound from my TV and my PC.
The way I envisaged doing this was by connecting my TV through HDMI (obviously) and using the ARC facility to send the sound through the HDMI cable, and my connecting my PC soundcard with an optical cable.
However, the manual for the system insists that I need to connect the TV via optical as well as via HDMI - and I can confirm that no sound goes through from my TV to the system using solely HDMI despite having the ARC facility turned on, so I will have to connect it up via optical as well which means I'll have to find some other method of connecting up my PC soundcard.
Based on this information, can you see any reason why this setup wouldn't work and why the ARC facility alone would not carry the TV sound itself?
(I can confirm that both the TV and the home cinema system are ARC compatible, as is the HDMI cable I'm using.)
