Just catching up with EastEnders, what do people think about the incorporation of background music (with lyrics) playing over some of the scenes? Personally, I find it quite distracting in scenes where there is dialogue, however I do like the idea, and therefore think that instrumental versions would be a better bet.

What does everyone else think?

Don't fix something that isn't broken. Music is not needed.

I noticed this too, it seems only to be in scenes in Lee and Whitney's flat. Maybe it's done to emphasise the fact they have more freedom now. I agree it's intrusive.

Yes, it's mostly in the Whitney & Lee scenes, but I've also noticed it in the Phil/Sharon/Louise scenes a couple of times, with the music playing from no obvious source (such as a radio) and I think Thursday's? (could be wrong) episode opened with music too playing over a few scenes at the beginning.

That song that was playing when Whitney was trying to seduce Lee the other night was absolutely awful and not the kind of thing that she would likely choose to put on.

At least with Hollyoaks they don't have dialogue when the music is still playing, it didn't even seem to be relevant music, it was just a nuisance.

It can be done well, but in Eastenders of late it's just intrusive. It's like they've got the work experience person in charge (and that's rude to work experience people). There is so little subtlety.

It seemed to be radios playing in Lee/Whitney's and Billy/Honey's scenes which is fine, it's realistic and indeed Honey picked the radio up and turned it off.

Most odd though in other scenes such as Dot/Patrick and not necessary at all.

That was bizarre. I love that tune and now my holiday playlist is ruined

That was a ridiculous choice of music. You Do Something to Me by Paul Weller which was pretty obscure and not really a mainstream background selection to make out to from a time when these two weren't even born! Don't want to get too cheesy or cliched but it wasn't exactly Barry White or Dido was it.

Don't know about the cameraman, but the musical crew needs sacking if that's the best they can come out with and why do they need music to get in the mood anyway?

I remember when this was added in Kirkwood's era too.

I think it's okay if it's in the height of a special week or part of a big storyline, but as long as it's rare and not done on all occasions.

The music last night was cheesy and unnecessary, ruining the scene. It was like The Archers meets Hollyoaks!

I assumed they were trying to drown out the bad dialogue.
