hes stuck in his ways and hes used to being pampered. hes not great at hiding his feelings and you can hear the cogs whirring when he has a plan. he can be shamed into not being so selfish and think of the collective - even if only because he sees some advantage/good outcome for him.

hes not so bad. and at least hes playing the game.

Maybe I'm just soppy but everytime he gets told off and tries to be all jolly hockey sticks doing that wobbly chin smile trying to stop himself from being a man baby, I want to give him a hug. 😰

Not that bad? He's brilliant, for me he is the reason to carry on watching.

Not only is he weird and eccentric, he can take abuse and criticism well - and even laugh about it.
I agree - I love weird and eccentric, People have a right to be different. I do think he's grown into the life there since the first week and it's good to see a friendship with Adam developing (The Unlikely Lads)

I listened to Martin talking about how he wasnt comfortable chatting up girls as he was a bit fat as a teenager, I dont think hes had much confidence to be honest, and sometimes shy or people with not much confidence over compensate by talking in a cheeky sort of manner to cover up....I could be way off of course and talking daft , but I liked his honesty as not many men will admit to not having girlfriends or being able to chat or date girls....I liked his honesty.

Ok I get he can be a bit of a prat sometimes but I find him quite funny and comical to watch. He's also a sweet guy, not like some of them who I think could be quite bitchy if they wanted to be. Ok yes he probably winds the campmates up but at least he's providing entertainment. What are the others doing? Even though they're all quite a nice bunch this year, they are abit boring to watch, except Martin! I wouldnt say the group are bullying him as such but I do think they can make him feel abit of an outcast at times and the way they look at each other and laugh. That can be hurtful.
Very fair OP. I think he's curmudgeonly more than anything. There doesn't seem to be an ounce of malice or badness in him. He's irritated by the food and finds lugging water up a hill hard work. Well that's fair enough, isn't it? It's just him being honest. A bit too honest if he goes on about it; but basically he's just speaking as he finds.

Not once has he bitched about anyone or been nasty. He's just an outsider and I think it was Danny who mainly forced that status on him. I think a lot of them, by the way, are quite fond of him. Joel, Lisa and Carol seem to like him a lot.
yep, totally agree with yours assessment of martin, thats the martin i see, not the nasty awful bloke some insist he is.

I like him, he's got stuck into some of the most horrible trials, been supportive and certainly not bland. He had a rocky start but seems to have won the most of the others over.

Any man who says his young son told him to wear his Man Suit in there is ok by me, he mocked himself right off , I didnt notice many of the others doing that. He set them all up about his personality early on not hiding it in a sly way like some others. He seems quite innocent to me. and I love his smile.

I found him very annoying to begin with but I am used to him now and I am warming to him.

I think he just doesn't think before he speaks and can come across as quite abrupt and rude. But he has also been very encouraging and supportive of others. People don't generally have the same opinion about someone for no reason. And nearly everyone in the camp seems to think he is odd, annoying but basically an alright kind of chap.

He may even get one of my votes tonight.

When they describe him as strange/odd, I think it's his lack of basic social graces they're referring to; ie, that a 54yr old man could be so petulant, so deaf to other people's needs, so unaware of mood, so bereft of the nomal social mores and basic niceties that we all instinctively use when in the company of people we don't know well so as not to unnecessarily annoy or upset them. Granted, he's much improved but he's still prone to thinking about his own needs and feelings first, hence why he ends up having to apologise so much.

But yeah, he's settled in and seems to have finally gotten the hang of what living harmoniously with people involves.

I agree. There's definitely been an improvement in his behaviour over the last two nights. He's more pleasant generally and less cringeworthy to watch. He was positively human in his task with Scarlett and of course Adam, who's helped him enormously with their friendship.
Did you see Danny Baker's interview on the ghastly Extra show?He said Martin had never seen the show and assumed it was like Big Brother. He had no idea about the necessary team spirit and supporting each other and his initial behaviour was insulting and arrogant, until they'd had enough.
We of course only see what the producers want us to see which in his and Scarlett's case has been more than enough for me in this Martin, Scarlett and Adam show. The rest are little more than extras. If any of them have anything to do with those three they might get a look in.
Has this been the worst year yet for favouritism?
I think hes brought out the best in Carole, Im really getting to like her too now.

Without a question of doubt, it's the other way round

If you didn't know who they were talking about - you'd think they were talking about Atilla the Hun or Vlad the Impaler rather than a rather harmless (a bit clumsy maybe) day-time TV presenter!

...who's been entertaining for all the wrong reasons, has had to slot into the clique and work things out for himself whereas the others had each other to explore with. I hate cliques with a passion.

I'm having a bit of a giggle thinking if this lot can't cope with a rather harmless chap like Martin - what the hell would they have done with Lady C last year. Oh I know - they'd all be too scared to take her on! Even Larry the Mardy Lamb!
