Sluggish YouView Box?
Firstly, I want to say that on the whole I am very pleased with my YouView box, however, there are times when it is slow to respond and behaves in a sluggish manner i.e. Guide takes a few seconds to appear/it takes a few seconds to change channel.
Anyone else experiencing a similar issue? Anyone know how to solve it? |

Possibly an issue at the BT server end so nowt you can do your end but suffer.
You could always try a power-cycle / soft reset to see if it makes a difference. |

You are in the TalkTalk forum, so I assume that your box is a Huawei model, not a Humax. If so, they have a reputation for being a bit sluggish anyway. If it is slower than usual, though, I believe the soft reset involves shutting it down, pulling the plug and waiting for a couple of minutes before plugging in and powering up again. This will allow all the capacitors to discharge completely. It won't remove your recordings.
Good news may be on the horizon. The new software update that is being rolled out over the next couple of months (starting next Monday, apparently) is rumoured to speed things up significantly. |

Pressing and holding the power button should also do a soft reset equivalent to power-cycling.

Cheers David and Gomezz. I actually switched the box off at the back and left it off for a few hours. It seems to have helped a bit. Maybe I should unplug it too to improve things further.
This upgrade sounds good. Let's hope it lives up to expectations. I am generally very pleased with my box all round. |

Mine did the same yesterday. Bit of a downer as I can't see any difference. Logically, I expect that I will one of the last to get the update because I use a retail BT-branded Humax box to receive the TalkTalk service. There again, maybe that minor update was to prepare the box for the big one. Time will tell.

The difference of yesterdays update was replacing the talktalk logo (when you press the youview button) in the bar with the more tv name. My Guess is that its a ISP configuration update only to complement the main update but its backwards compatible with the older version whilst all the boxes get the update.

I found the More TV (aka TalkTalk Player) yesterday, following the mini-update of the day before. The new interface is certainly efficient, although I don't think it looks as swish as the old one. It seems to work quickly, though. I watched an episode of 'Game of Thrones' to check it out and the quality was excellent (but, then, it had been before the update).
I am curious to know what running in the cloud actually means. I use cloud storage on my computer, and that simply means that back-ups of my files are stored somewhere else on a server and available whenever I need them. Since the catch-up services, players and boosts are all streamed from the Internet, does that not mean that they already run in the cloud? I assume that the answer to that question is, 'no' since we are promised a significant speed increase for all boxes. I also wonder whether moving to the cloud will result in an increase in speed for the Freeview aspects of YouView. Will it, for example, take over some of the functions of the tuner so that channel switching becomes faster? The update started rolling out three days ago. Somebody must have it by now. I would be very interested to read their report. |

It's a buzzword with multiple meanings but in this case, I believe they are using it to mean "the internet" (that is one of the accepted meanings of the word in IT circles). What you are thinking of is actually "Cloud Storage" - storing data on remote servers rather than on local drives - which has become known as "the cloud" in common parlance. It can also refer to the system where an application is based on a remote server and only installed into RAM on the local device on an ad hoc basis. Confusing, ain't it ![]() The new YV UI is going to be based around HTML rather than Air (an offshoot of Adobe's much criticised Flash technology). Put simply, the new UI is just a fancy webpage. The bottom line being that it will be insanely simple for them to update the UI in future. And an opinion - I'm thinking that this is a step towards making "YouView" available as an online service that is not 100% reliant on a dedicated STB as HTML is platform independent. Youview could be be easily added to any device as an App or simply accessed through a browser. |
