And what "country" would that be precisely ? Despite the anthem, parliament, currency, flag, etc, etc, the EU is NOT a country so how can anyone be a citizen of a country that does not exist ? Who would you call upon if you were in a country outside the EU, which do exist incidentally, and needed diplomatic or consular assistance. I have no issue with anyone who wishes to remain a citizen of some political project with federalistic intentions, so long as they pay for it themselves. I`m sure every single one of the 16,141,241 who voted to remain are forming an orderly queue as we speak. (Or type for those who take every syllable literally)

Many are doing precisely this, by the simple expedient of claiming dual nationality of another EU state. Some figures reckon that 25% of the UK population is eligable for Irish dual nationality alone. The problem is that it's not an avenue open to all UK citizens, simply because thay don't have the required family connections.

He added: "Between 15 and 30 million British citizens deeply regret Brexit.
![]() ![]() these people just don't stop. Makes me smile It's not 'free' movement if you have to pay a subscription, are the EU trying to use their version of Black Friday sales on people?

Currently, if you're the citizen of an EU member state and travelling outside the EU, you're entitled to consular assistance from the embassy/consulate of any other member state. Presumably, under this scheme, those Brits who opted to remain EU citizens would retain that right.

^ There we go again - nasty, toxic and hostile nationalism on display and directed against loyal British citizens who just do not happen to share your zealous views on one particular matter.

I work with a woman whose dad was born in Rome and is looking at applying for an Italian passport. |

Indeed. Anyone from Northern Ireland is automatically entitled to an Irish passport as is anyone with a parent or grandparent born on the island or Ireland.
I work with a woman whose dad was born in Rome and is looking at applying for an Italian passport. Irish Citizenship is automatic - a passport is merely proof of citizenship. So I do hope people don't start overloading the small Irish passport office in Dublin with needless passport applications. |

I very much doubt 25 per cent of British citizens outside NI meet that criteria though. And it's more complicated if it's a grandparent..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-37246769 The stats are hard to estimate but they came out with a "conservative" estimate of 6.7 million people in the UK being entitled to an Irish passport - which is more than the number of people in the Republic of Ireland. So the 25% claim is probably an exaggeration but it's not an insignificant number. Quote:

The treachery in this whole sorry saga is firmly in the hands of those who give away the rights of the British people.

It could be a great money spinner and job creation scheme for the Irish government - and who is to say the application are "needless"? If they are entitled to one and are willing to pay the free then why shouldn't they do it?
Unless it is your intention to use your freedom of movement rights to live and work in another EU member state post 2020 why would you need to bother. |

This is exactly what Brexiteers wanted, commonsense ideas to benefit britain instead of the the run away train which is the EU. Maybe team remoaners will see sence!

That just comes across as toxic Leave extremism. There should be no mention of traitors or treachery in respect of a non-binding referendum vote.

Confirmed this will be the EU's stance after it got passed through EU parliament. Nice PR counter move by them, will get them popularity and support. This is the scenario where EVERYONE can be happy "have cake and eat it" if you will.. |
