And what "country" would that be precisely ? Despite the anthem, parliament, currency, flag, etc, etc, the EU is NOT a country so how can anyone be a citizen of a country that does not exist ? Who would you call upon if you were in a country outside the EU, which do exist incidentally, and needed diplomatic or consular assistance. I have no issue with anyone who wishes to remain a citizen of some political project with federalistic intentions, so long as they pay for it themselves. I`m sure every single one of the 16,141,241 who voted to remain are forming an orderly queue as we speak. (Or type for those who take every syllable literally)
Currently, if you're the citizen of an EU member state and travelling outside the EU, you're entitled to consular assistance from the embassy/consulate of any other member state. Presumably, under this scheme, those Brits who opted to remain EU citizens would retain that right.

Many are doing precisely this, by the simple expedient of claiming dual nationality of another EU state. Some figures reckon that 25% of the UK population is eligable for Irish dual nationality alone. The problem is that it's not an avenue open to all UK citizens, simply because thay don't have the required family connections.

He added: "Between 15 and 30 million British citizens deeply regret Brexit. these people just don't stop. Makes me smile It's not 'free' movement if you have to pay a subscription, are the EU trying to use their version of Black Friday sales on people?

No they wouldn't, so you can stop indulging in paranoid fantasies.

As a British Citizen, I would not need consular assistance in any Commonwealth country as we have High Commissioners as representatives as opposed to embassies. A quick search returned only the Kingdom of Bhutan and San Marino as having no British Embassies but the one in Florence, Italy, acts for the latter. So no real incentive to require EU "citizenship" on that basis. Or any other as far as I am concerned.

Indeed. Anyone from Northern Ireland is automatically entitled to an Irish passport as is anyone with a parent or grandparent born on the island or Ireland.

I work with a woman whose dad was born in Rome and is looking at applying for an Italian passport.

Why do you say that? Those categories are not mutually exclusive.

The treachery in this whole sorry saga is firmly in the hands of those who give away the rights of the British people.

I very much doubt 25 per cent of British citizens outside NI meet that criteria though. And it's more complicated if it's a grandparent.

Irish Citizenship is automatic - a passport is merely proof of citizenship. So I do hope people don't start overloading the small Irish passport office in Dublin with needless passport applications.

There was a recent investigation by the excellent BBC More or Less show into this 25% claim.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-37246769

The stats are hard to estimate but they came out with a "conservative" estimate of 6.7 million people in the UK being entitled to an Irish passport - which is more than the number of people in the Republic of Ireland. So the 25% claim is probably an exaggeration but it's not an insignificant number.

It could be a great money spinner and job creation scheme for the Irish government - and who is to say the application are "needless"? If they are entitled to one and are willing to pay the free then why shouldn't they do it?

That just comes across as toxic Leave extremism. There should be no mention of traitors or treachery in respect of a non-binding referendum vote.

It is needless if it delays applications for Irish citizens who can only get an Irish passport.

Unless it is your intention to use your freedom of movement rights to live and work in another EU member state post 2020 why would you need to bother.

The idea has come from an EU leader, not from the UK

There shouldn't I agree however a non binding referendum is still a true measure of the will of the electorate. Our Government rejected the EU as was, we were asked to accept the new deal and the choice that the EU realistically gave us was this is the deal take it or leave. Working at ways to overcome that vote does have a nasty edge to it. If I recall 75 the Leave camp at that time accepted it with a degree of good grace and agreed the electorate had spoken.

Confirmed this will be the EU's stance after it got passed through EU parliament.

Nice PR counter move by them, will get them popularity and support.

This is the scenario where EVERYONE can be happy "have cake and eat it" if you will..

Would actually be very positive and helpful. It means low skilled and unskilled British workers can move to any EU country to find work just as they have been able to do up until now and it also guarantees the rights of all those Britons living in Europe.
