What is it with soap cast getting abuse?
Do the fans really think the cast aren't acting and the storylines are real? I don't get it. :/

Sadly in this day and age anybody and Everbody can be victims of abuse, it doesn't matter if you are a celebrity or not.
The internet makes it so easier for people to give abuse without thinking of the consequences. |

The sad thing with most soap actors being on social media and quite actively as well, it makes it easier for people to openly hostile and/or abusive towards them. It's not right, but sadly that's the consequence of being online at times. People should be smart enough to seperate their dislike of character/actor/storyline though and not be vile to a complete stranger on social media.

There have always been some can't differentiate between reality and soaps, sadly the number seems to be growing instead of lessening

It's not just online though. Many get abuse shouted at them in the street. Remember reading a few years ago Kate ford being reduced to tears from it. Now She's learned to accept it. No one should be made to feel like that.

It's terrible. Believing a soap and character are real is clearly a sign of mental illness. I've read countless stories of actors getting hit with little old ladies' handbags while out shopping, etc. i'd never be able to cope with being famous.

You only have to look right here on DS at the number of times the comment, "he/she is only playing himself/herself" appears, (despite knowing sweet FA about the actor other than what they've read in the gutter press
), to see why such abuse is so prevalent.

I remember years ago when Linda Henry was in court accused of verbally abusing a toilet attendant I think it was and saying she gets so much abuse herself when she's out from people who think she reverts to her persona as aggressive Shirley. Vivian Brown who played Mrs Mangel in Neighbours got loads of idiots heckling her.
As has already been said, people are too thick to separate fictional stories from actual actors. It's also a symptom of the wider problem of social media where people can launch campaigns almost instantly to influence elections, propagate unsubstantiated rumours on Youtube and almost have witch hunts against footballers, pop stars, etc. That said, celebs really need to exercise some restraint and not retaliate. Difficult I know. |

I think it's something that happens to soap actors more than movie actors, possibly because we see them in those roles every day, week after week, year after year. It's as if they become that character. I'm not condoning abuse of any kind, just saying how I can see why the line gets blurred so easily for some people. We often don't see them in any other format or show.
