CS: Archives? Any chance of a release?

Yes it's been discussed umpteen times, because ITV continue to refuse to release the archives.

Surely it's no more niche than the interest in old episodes of Emmerdale Farm, and that got put out? I think ITV might be pleasantly suprised if they did release the show. If they released it on a streaming platform it would be ideal, but even a pay-per-episode would be great (if a bit pricey for many).

Yes, compilations would work and as I've said themed nights. ITV3 could easily accommodate Christmas editions, or 'best of' Rovers landladies/punch ups. They missed a great opportunity with Jean's passing.

Sooner or later the episodes will turn up on the internet, be it YouTube, Dailymotion or someone's own server. As football has shown, piracy comes in many different forms: you close one site down, another will pop up. I don't think those watching the Corrie archive care about HD, the G+ recordings averaged something like 10k on AuntieCorrie's page.

It was interesting that ITV shut them all down... was it because of music rights or do they actually value the archive?

Hopefully they actually value the archive.

I've done a little bit of maths and ITV are selling episodes of Heartbeat at £1.10 an episode (going by Series 1 being £11 on amazon), similarly The Bill is £0.62 (going by Vol 1 being £8.00 on amazon). Taking an average of these two prices we could be looking at a retail price of £0.86 an hour for Corrie.

With 9,000 episodes (majority half an hour so say £0.43)that's an eye-watering total purchase price of £3,870 - which is probably out of most of our budgets. The simple economics might very well be the reason they were never released and will never be. Even if ITV could somehow flog them viably for 10p an episode we're looking at £450 for the lot (a more realistic price that we could probably stretch too but still not money most of us can just take out the bank).
