Buzz Aldrin was overshadowed by Neil Armstrong who I think most people would name as the iconic person of space travel along with Yuri Gagarin.

And is Jimmy Carter an iconic figure? He's sort of the forgotten president

Tricky one.

I can think of a few of people I respect and that have done amazing things, but I think you have to specify a sub category, like pop icon, cultural icon etc.

It's all a little subjective; I see Castro as a historical figure, but not an icon.
