Sensible choices:

Madonna
Paul McCArtney
Pele
Queen Elizabeth
Jane Fonda
Jack Nicolson
Leo Di Caprio (will be regarded as an all time movie icon in future-no doubt about it)
Mick Jagger
Mikhail Gorbachev
Trump (love him or loathe him, he's an important historical figure now)
Tony Blair (as above)
Beyonce (see Leo)

And not Trump??

The thing about Blair, as with Trump is he's more of an important & charismatic PM that the guy that came before & after him. Kinda like Trump.

And, although I hate this phrase, both captured the "zeitgeist" of their era's.

Re bib. Historical figures, yes, but icons???

Wouldn't Obama be more likely considered an icon as first black president?

Ha! I so nearly added her!

She may be largely unknown to young 'uns today but she was a big, big star of the 50s & 60s. She's one of the few remaining actresses of the Monroe& Taylor era.

I love Oscar Levant's crack about Doris Day;

My last picture for Warners was Romance on the High Seas. It was Doris Day's first picture; that was before she became a virgin.

Depends on how you interpret "Icon" :an unforgettable historical figure of huge importance to their era, then Yes.
Icon meaning "beloved historical figure" then no.

I see Hitler as a historical Icon I. The former sense, but not in the latter.

As far as Obama goes, nice guy, but I'm not sure a massively memorable president, other than the symbolic role as 1st black President. He ain't no Kennedy.

I kind of agree, but imo, an icon is someone who is generally viewed in a positive manner, so whereas many would be historical figures, I wouldn't call them icons.

Down to interpretation I guess
