Wow, I think both Remain and the Lib Dems needed this.
The fast Lib Dem come back is astonishing, 12 months ago this would have been unthinkable. |

Don't like it the other way round, do you?
No-one challenged the ref result in court. Or did you not notice that? |

This is just the start towards that ultimate prize, but believe me tonight's result is a stunning upset and will have the government very worried.

Out of touch. Who is? 😉 I never believed tonight's result was possible in my wildest dreams. I didn't even bother commenting on it until now. This. Is. Huge. |

TBF this is an even bigger upset than the referendum itself. It shows how appalled people are by the prospect of the so-called hard brexit that will decimate jobs and our economy and drive millions upon millions into absolute poverty.

A seat which is one of the most pro-remain in the country voted against a Brexiter and there are now 9 Lib Dem MPs as opposed to 8. It's hardly earth shattering. |

Based on this i'd imagine that the Lib Dems would currently win a by-election in my home constituency of Harrogate and Knaresborough (LD until 2010, Tory since. Voted remain) if there was one, I bet this result has our Tory MP quaking in his boots for 2020.

It's not comparable so your rather infantile comparison is about as feeble as the above post.

Seat which voted 70 per cent remain votes for a pro remain candidate - but the pro leave candidate gets way more than 30 per cent on a very low turnout.
Stop trying to guild the turd that has just been handed to May. Her majority just went down. How long before she starts begging the Ulster Unionists for support, like Major was reduced to. |

Not comparable I don't think. It was only just remain in the referendum. 48,211 v 46,374.

I live in neighbouring constituency and this area is not hard brexit territory. If Tories persist with it (looking less likely) then they will lose votes to a centre party.
Why do you think the Tories won't persist with it btw? It's politically impossible for them not to do so. It's for that reason that Labour have said they won't block A50. |

53% turnout in a byelection is not 'very low.' It isn't even low.

Excellent result that couldn't have happened to a smugger git. So much for his hissy fit
![]() Shame the Labour party couldn't have saved themselves the embarrassment and gone for not putting up a candidate but at least the Labour voters deserted en masse, Wolmar losing his deposit is is a nice final giggle, at least it will be when the Labour party spinners try to explain why the party is in anyway still relevant when Jerry's popularity has engorged Richmond CLP to 1600+ members but they could still only muster 1515 votes ![]() First by-election in ages where the result has been played for laughs. Hope we get a few more before the big comedy festival in 2020 |

I think this result may lead to a vote in Parliarment to get rid of the fixed term act (or whatever it's called) and a General Election sooner rather than later
Wasn't Richmond a Lib Dems stronghold until 2010 anyway ? |

Perfect just perfect. Unashamedly vote LibDems tactically in my constituency at GEs, so very easily see how this has come about, it's Europe, its Heathrow, its untasteful London Mayor Campaign, it's Conservative government.

Are we really going to get excited about 53% of people in one of the most prosperous areas of the country registering a protest vote against the government (who didn't even field a candidate) and dumping a charisma- free sitting MP who decided to turn himself into a one issue candidate at precisely the wrong time.
Who knew that a typical voter in this area would be anti-Brexit? People in Richmond live in an area largely untouched by problems caused by immigration ( squeezes on schools, housing and hospitals and are probably more likely to benefit from a so called thriving economy that is underpinned by low wages. The government played this by election badly but the result changes nothing. The government need to do the best they can to retain the benefits of the single market without compromising the country's right to decide its own affairs and control it's borders. |

I'd say being pedantic/dissecting a bit of pisstaking is rather feeble and shows how you can't take any humour when its turned around against what you and cheetah usually use.
You should be on the stage..... sweeping it. |

Wasn't Richmond a Lib Dems stronghold until 2010 anyway ? Interestingly, Labour were down 8.6% last night, so a bad result for them. |

I actually think her saying she'll vote down A50 without batting an eyelid will be bad for Lib Dems in the long run. Openly saying you want to ignore the result of a referendum doesn't play well with most voters, whichever side of the EU argument they're from. Most people support democracy. |
