Christ, how many different threads are going to be started about this one subject? Try scouring the boards here a bit.

Sorry if I offended you in some way? This is posted in the youview area of the forums for people who have retail and not ISP related youview service, surely a valid post?

If you had been the first person to post about it, yes. As it happens, you're like the sixth. Also, whether this is the non BT/Plusnet/TT section or not, it's not difficult to find the earlier threads. There's even numerous YouView discussions in the Broadcasting section now, some guy called Dave seems determined to spam the board with any YV-related thought that pops into his head.

Congratulations to the originator of this post (Technick) for raising it in the correct place. He may not be the first but why didn't you (Jimmy_Barnes) berate the others that raised it for being in the WRONG place?

So the roll out started on 28th Nov - anyone got it yet?

I believe that retail boxes will be the last to get it, so probably late January or early February.

That went well then! Why do you hate it?

I hate it because I can read - I don't need lots of silly little thumbnails all over the place making it more difficult to see what recordings you have. I can see absolutely no improvement in any respect as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for the explanation, although I'm not really surprised. They've just made the user interface more pretty from what I've seen.

It'll be a staggered rollout, so unless you've got plans to take your Ethernet cable out every night before you go to bed for the next couple of years, I can't really see that being an effective solution.

Yes, every night from here to eternity

Another option if you have it connected over wi-fi is to set Power-Save mode on your home hub overnight.

That is a good idea as it doesn't stop other internet access.

Seems a bit of trouble to go to just to avoid getting an update that probably isn't as bad as early users are claiming. I like the current (old) YV interface, but people tend to get used to new things.

Agreed. Let us not forget that an opinion is entirely subjective. Just because some people hold it, it doesn't follow that most will. It all depends on personal taste. There is, I think, also a tendency for people to overstate their argument in an attempt to justify their opinion.

If it were not for MotoGP I would not bother with Youview as the UI is execrable and I doubt this update will fix any of the many fundamental issues. Even now I am considering ditching the Youview box and going with the official MotoGP app instead for next season which has the advantages of being able to follow all the sessions on catch up even while not at home.

It seems unlikely the new GUI will fix any problem for someone with such a niche requirement (and nor should they bother!).

Regardless of the advice offered on this thread, the update will come and people will either like it or dislike it. If you like it, that's fine. If you dislike it, put up with it until your minimum contract period has expired, then switch to a platform that you do like.

I am a TalkTalk subscriber, but I receive the service through a Humax retail box. Therefore, I will probably be one of the last to get the update. I try a software update, just in case, every day, but it hasn't worked so far. I am quite excited about the new development, not because of the new user interface (I am reserving judgement on that until I see it working properly) but because of the whole concept of running in the Cloud.

I asked a question about this in another thread a week or two ago and received an excellent reply. As I understand it (and please correct me if I am wrong), this will effectively turn our boxes into the television equivalents of Chromebooks. They will become terminals that also accept Freeview transmissions. The number crunching will be taken over by whatever server we are connected to, thus relieving the box of a lot of work and allowing it to run faster. Extrapolating from that, it also seems likely that they will be able to develop the platform in all sorts of ways that are impossible under the current arrangements. In theory, a customer should be able to opt for any package from something more or less equivalent to Freeview Play right up to something that rivals Sky Q. Remember that BT already has a 4K compatible YouView box. In time, that must surely become the norm.

4k will certainly become the norm at some point, but current hardware can't drive a 4k display with just a software upgrade. A new STB for everyone with a legacy STB.

Agreed. We are talking long term here. Hard drives are mechanical. By nature, they are not everlasting, so PVRs usually have to be replaced every so many years regardless. As the current crop of Full HD boxes wears out, they will be replaced by 4K boxes. It is no more difficult than putting a better graphics card in your PC. Ditto the current proliferation of full HD TVs. Not everybody hangs onto their equipment until it is completely worn out, in fact most people don't. That is why there is a thriving second-hand market on the likes of Ebay. In the meantime, 4K will be reserved as a premium service for those willing to pay the most. As I mentioned in my previous post, BT already offer some 4K content. It will be interesting to see if TalkTalk will do the same. Personally, I doubt it. Rumours continue to circle that BT is buying out their YouView business. If that comes about, I would expect it to be maintained as an entry-level service, while BT reserves 4K to themselves.
