I never liked Ed as a politician, but my opinion of him completely and utterly changed because of his SCD attitude. He loved it, clearly did his best (and some of the dancing is very difficult for a large man), and rejoiced in the whole experience. I rejoiced with him, and think he made this series.
As to Katya, having the "comic" contestant in her first series did not put her off at all. She embraced it, did a fabulous job, and has done no end of good for her own credibility as a professional. I do so hope she is back next year. |

Apparently Ed has released a clip of him doing the rhumba in his kitchen. They just showed it on BBC Breakfast.
All I can say is, we have been robbed. |

I'm gutted that Ed's gone! But we all knew that as soon as he hit the "dance off" he'd gone. Probably Judge Rinder would have been the only one, he stood a slight chance against, and had this been the x factor, he'd have probably been saved as a couple of judges would have put him through because they considered that's what the public would want, and not only that if it were to go to deadlock, it goes back to the public vote. With strictly, it's not really about what the public want, they're marked on ability, and should there be a tie Len makes the final decision - which is better really, but I wished the public had managed to save Ed for a little longer

I understand what you mean about making assumptions about people because of their political persuasion and then being pleasantly surprised. It just comes across as posters feeling the need to assure other posters that they don't like Ed's politics, before they praise him for something else. It's a bit like how people would say, 'I'm not a Tory, but...' fifteen years ago. A sign of the times I guess.

Why does everyone keep saying how bad a politician he was?
Is it because he was labour? |

Is it because he was labour? Not sharing the same political views does not necessarily equate to regarding them as a "bad politician" or even a bad person. There are a number of politicians whom I think are excellent politicians but I don't share their political stance. |

Is it because he was labour? I also didn't like Michael Portillo as a politician. But I now think he has found his niche in his TV work, and is very enjoyable to watch. The political party doesn't come into it. Ed - Labour; Michael - Conservative. It is purely that I have seen a different side to them, and liked what I saw. |

I for one never said he was a BAD politician. I said I didn't like him as a politician, which isn't the same thing at all. To me he came across as smug when he was an MP.

'I couldn't stand his politics' in various differeent places and was wondering. I know labour politicians always get bad press so it's expected. |

I wonder if the producers could persuade Alex Salmond to sign up one year.

They should have had the farewell dance to Me And Mrs Jones.

I don't think he improved a great deal, he flailed his arms around like windmills and his hands are completely disgusting. He stomped around a lot and he stuck his big arse out for laughs.
I still think week 1 was his best actual dance One thing though for me is that he got into character so well, it was excellent, the best of any celebrity this series. |

It was inevitable that he would eventually find himself in the dance-off and we all knew that he was a goner as soon as that happened. Ed knew it too. I'm sorry to see him go, I will miss him, but thanks, Ed, for making SCD so much fun this year! He was such a good sport, and Katya played her part brilliantly too.

I did like Ed as a politician but that aside I think he did a fab job on Strictly.
He isn't an actor and has zero prior dance exposure and although you could argue that he is used to the cameras, he was pushed way out of his comfort zone. He tried his best and for that I'm grateful. Did he improve? Yes I think so and his confidence grew and he threw himself into the dances with gusto. He is 49 and I think came into this being a little overweight and unfit and he has certainly demonstrated that you can teach an old dog new tricks. He is now an extremely enthusiastic convert to dancing. I always think the Latin dances are very tough on the older competitors, especially the males as they need so much more body movement and Ed showed us that, with work, you can achieve a decent dance. No one was expecting perfection but I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by the dances he did. |

I think Ed has set the new standard for the "Old Person Dancing" category (male and female) for future Strictly Shows. No more Russell Grants or Anne Widdicombes - just people who really commit and really improve from week to week AND who respect their partner.
I enjoyed all Ed and Katya's routines, and now feel that the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals must be cleared for the proficient dancers. |

Is it because he was labour? So I was well disposed towards Ed before the series started, but was delighted to discover the personality who's given many of us more fun than certainly I can remember in 13 series of Strictly, embraced the campness of Strictly in its entirety and forged a pro/celeb partnership with Katya which outstrips any that I can think of. I now find him even more intriguing.

Have to admit, I started the series thinking I was going to really hate Ed and be glad to be shot of him because of my own pre-conceived ideas about him.
Here to say now how wrong was I! He's been funny, but also a quite decent dancer, he's been generous in his praise for the other contestants and formed a lovely partnership with Katya who must I guess have been a bit nervous in her first year. So, Ed Balls, I salute you - for brightening up Saturday evenings for the last couple of months. The better dancers may all be left, but a bit of the light and a lot of the entertainment has gone with you. |
