Is there usually a dance off in the semi-final? I really cant recall.... Was thinking this year there will only be 4 of them so we will know who the top two are, would make more sense to me if they scrapped the DO for the semi final and went with the public vote surely.....

Yes. One through on highest votes.

There was last year. It robbed Anita and Gleb off a place in the final. I've no doubt that they'd have gone through if it were left to the public vote.

Unfortunately, yes. Really , by that time, it should be public vote only.

When they saved Mark Wright over Jake Wood, was that because he was dancing with a Clifton?

At the moment it sounds like there will be a dance off, but I agree that it should be done on public vote alone in the semis. I remember they scrapped the dance off the Monday of semi-final week in Series 7, leaving it purely up to public vote, but there were only two spots in the final that year.

Which year did they change it at the last minute to make sure Denise Van Overmarked was in the final?

The change from 5 to 4 couples makes it particularly tough for the lower marked couples. I'd be in favour of scrapping the dance off at this stage.

The worst scenario for the BBC will be if someone tops the public vote, goes into the dance off, and gets eliminated. After the Blue Peter pet scandal, and all the rest of it, they will want to make sure that the result of paid voting does count.

The judges will never let go of their control. Public picks the winner, so it's only fair the public pick the finalists.

I do think due to the make up of the final this year that they'd be better off scrapping it because as you say if: (This is based on JR going out next week)

Danny- 4
Louise-3
Ore-2
Claudia-1

Claudia could get the highest vote but still leave against Ore in the dance off

Claudia 1 + 4= 5
Ore- 2+1=3
Louise- 3+3= 6
Danny 4+2=6

Definitely should be combined scores only and no DO in the semi imo to avoid this.

In recent years, the judges have only been able to choose who takes the fourth place in the final. The fact that they'll be able to choose who gets the third place is disappointing. (I don't mean who comes third or fourth, just that remaining space.)

Time for Tess to consult that well known "Strictly Book of Rules" which was located on the Anastacia doesn't have to dance the dance off night.

and Hello Tom too.

It was this situation and the complete mess of the judges score (admittedly with only 3 couples remaining) that created the problem. With the public (who was clearly getting the public votes) being unable to save him from the dance off the BBC had to cancel the entire vote and put them all through.

I agree with those who say the dance off should be stopped when it gets down to the final stages. Last 5 I would say.

It was 2012 the year Louis won. In 2010 and 2011 they lost two at the SF stage. The number of celebs was finally increased after having three two couple finals within 4 years. It would have been four in a row but for the squiffy scoring in Tom's year.
