I think in her case in was done deliberately. The fawning praise, the over-elaborate production - all of it was part of the 'performance', if you will, because Cowell clearly knew she would be a lightning rod for controversy and it clearly worked if you look at the media coverage she got.
I caught about 5 seconds of her interview on the Xtra Factor where she pitched for a record deal from Cowell, and I suspect she'll probably get one but it'll probably be one or two singles with an album dependent on sales.
Hopefully that'll be the point where the public stop thinking they're getting one over Cowell by voting to keep her in and the single won't even make the top 100.
