Some good publicity this week for Radio Caroline in the mainstream press as well as online and radio. Let's just hope Ofcom get on with it and award them the licence ASAP. Pull your finger out Ofcom surprise everyone give them 50kW financed from a slice of the BBC licence fee, I'm not seriously expecting that last two bits just joking/dreaming.

With no studio within the planned coverage area, and no concrete plans to deliver the 'social gain' required of community radio stations, this is almost an automatic rejection unless Ofcom are planning on being significantly more lenient with AM than FM licences.

The entire application seems to consist of "we will discuss this with Ofcom after the licence has been awarded". It's almost as if they assume they'll be given 1kW on 648kHz and can then make it up as they go along.

Inclined to agree. Having read the application it relies more than a little of the notion of "we're a broadcasting legend" so give us a license.

It's a difficult one for ofcom: Do they dish out a license based on a relatively weak application (based on their traditional critera), or refuse and risk a backlash from anoraks and inevitable negative media coverage.

I suspect what will happen is that ofcom WILL offer a license, but won't budge on power levels.

All that said, it would be refreshing for ofcom to take the view that AM is a dying medium and rapidly becoming irrelevant, so why not let the anoraks have their fun and dish out 5kw on 648?

Interesting also to see that this application puts any ship based emissions firmly to bed.... Reality bites!

Two regular presenters are based in Suffolk and are effectively our local studios for the proposed AM service.

Lawrie Hallett is ex ofcom so I would hope his input has pointed them in the right direction in the application.

Are these presenters offering up their home studios as public facilities for the community radio station? Perhaps they could build a studio in someone's garage like The HitMix... !

Lawrie Hallett has not been at Ofcom for quite some time now. I'm not sure how that's relevant.

Ofcom haven't set any power levels for the Region 11 applications, more a case of define your community of interest and service area, it can be wider than usually granted, which implies higher power levels.

Remember, others are also after licences too Quasar with it's usual 10 listeners on the internet, with Ex Caroline deserter: Cliff Osborn is one example.

But I am confident, Caroline will get the Licence they deserve, at a suitable power & on a good low frequency too. I am also confident, if this works out - Licences will be granted in Many other parts of the UK - perhaps sharing the same frequency.

I too wonder, why some people are very "Anti Caroline" - perhaps it is Caroline's historical bending of the law of the past, they find so unforgivable? Or do they have a vested interest - in a rival licence application?
Or some sort of jealousy?
With MW being abandoned by the big boys, why not give this a go, is my attitude - if it fails, it can be shut down - though I personally think it will work, but like you, I have Anorak tendencies myself....

I think there is more chance of the Mi Amigo being refloated ,the mast re-erected and be back on the air by Christmas than getting a reply to your question -----

Morning chaps! "Condemned"? I think you're taking things a little too personally. More a realistic assessment of Caroline's application VS ofcom's criteria for awwarding a community license. As Eitshal said further up the thread, the 'social gain' criteria are difficult to quantify within the application.

What defines an anorak? Someone with a passion or love for something, in this case radio, of course we all know how the term was born - it's not a term of abuse!

I'm well aware of Caroline's place in popular culture, but I think you need to accept that Caroline's relevance in today's radio market is limited, as the application states, to a specific community of interest.

To the best of my knowledge Caroline is not an officially registered religion, yet, but based on the level of vitriol thus far, perhaps that could be an avenue to explore if this application fails.

The Mary Rose was pulled out of the sea & the lost half will be replaced, centuries later - if the "will" (& cash) was there, the resurrection of the Mi Amigo, would be a doddle, she is in very shallow water - pump the sand out - floatation bags surround her, up she comes (Mast laying across her) - probably in 2 parts now, as she ruptured where she was extended many years ago.

Looks like Quasar is going for a new AM mast on a new site near Croydon.
Last round2 4 London stations got AM licences,

so they have a better chance of getting a licence with AM than FM, but only Betar-Bangla got on air and for various reasons the others handed back licences.

AM is fast becoming obsolete except for ethnic stations and many of these are also now on DAB. But as they say in the Caroline bid many car radios still have AM, which will help justify the transmissions. (although the bit where it says over 45s struggle with new technology will be a bit insulting to many!)

Hopefully soon either Caroline or Quasar will also go DAB+ in London?

There is room for both on MW, but with Quasar's miniscule listenership, often in single figures on shoutcast, do they appeal to hardly anyone? It's the democracy factor.......
