Or has become de-sensitised to them having been around them for 2 weeks
I was the reverse of Adam. As a young child (aged 3 or 4), my dad used to lift me up to take huge house spiders off the wall and I'd carry them outside. They really didn't bother me. Then when I was 6 or 7, I watched Dr Who and the Planet of the Spiders where enormous spiders used to climb on people's backs and become absorbed into their bodies before taking over their minds. I've had a dreadful phobia ever since.
Strangely, I can tolerate spiders more outside, as for me, they're in their natural habitat. But inside the house, especially the quick movers, have me screaming the place down. Probably because I feel trapped in an enclosed space with them. And, as a child, an enormous house spider ran across my chest when I was in bed, and that added to my phobia.
But people can and do become desensitised to their fears. I think that's what has happened with Adam.
