Ann Widdecombe, easily!

Ed was very funny but not, in my opinion, ever a joke contestant. (Subtle difference! )

Ann Widdecombe - she was totally toxic and didn't even try to dance

I don't know if Jerry Hall was a joke, but I haven't remembered a single one of her dances, like she was there just to collect the cheque.

Why did she bother even going on the show, then?
maybe it was a social experiment to see just how far the strictly magic extends... just who could be rehabilitated through their participation in the show...

Is Widdy more unpopular on this forum than Jay was popular? Trying to remember another more emphatic margin of victory on a poll

I'd say so. She was pretty much universally loathed - except for Terry, of course, although his adulation of Widdy was a wind up. Some would say it was trolling.

Mark Benton? He was brilliant.

And where are Fiona Philips and Carol Vordeman, who were really awful and hilarious? Anne wins the contest for being awful, but if I wanted to cheer myself up by watching someone not be able to dance, I would never watch her, I'd watch Fiona Philips tumble around.

Fiona Philips was dreadful, wasn't she? She had that spineless look of an acutely limp stick of celery.

I was wondering where Fiona was too. Truly terrible - held several bottom scoring dance records for years and she still holds the rhumba record jointly with Carol Kirkwood and it took severe bad theming and very bad music to get Carol down to her level. Fiona managed that level of direness all on her own.

Widdecombe. Revolting woman who made no attempt to learn the dances. I remain bewildered by how she stayed so long.
I too remain baffled she was even rude about Blackpool or at least dismissive.

That's OK because nobody has voted for him.

I can't decide whether the MC Hammer routine he did was meant to be serious - for example would they give that to Kevin Clifton? - or was that marking him out as a joke contestant.
It was funny The only cha cha cha I've ever truly loved - really not joking.

One of my favourite ever SCD moments. I never tre of watching him solemnly, plodding across the floor, grasping his lapel and dragging poor Kristina, as you say, like a bag of spuds.
I'm sorry I'm laughing as I read it was comedy gold - now Kristina was a good sport for actually chereographing that :

That said his ballroom was mostly ok - and his opening waltz was actually very sweet.

Quentin hardly moved. He just stood there most of the time and sort of shuffled his feet about twice.
I think Quentin holds the record for the lowest score - 4, ie 1 each from each of the judges.

What's the difference between 'joke' contestants and really bad contestants?

I've always thought Quentin Wilson was the worst male contestant but he's not considered a joke?

Fiona Phillips and Kate Garraway likewise for the women.
Worst and possibly funnier than the others, click this at 2.55 ;

Judy Murray and Scott Mills. Horrible to watch, both of them. Anne Widdecombe was SO bad that she was genuinely entertaining but was happy to be made to look ridiculous.

"Whisper quietly "........I actually liked Widdy 🙈. I'm really surprised to see how many people hated her involvement on the show in this thread . I thought she was entertaining and a great sport 🙈.

I actually didn't actively dislike anyone on the op list but my choice for worst joke contestant would be Craig Kelly : delusional, awful, not funny, and did I mention delusional ? I couldn't stand him on the show. Till this day, I don't know how he lasted until blackpool !!! I'm convinced it must have been Flavia fans voting mostly for him. He really was extremely annoying on top of being a terrible dancer who thought was Fred Aistaire in his head 😤

A contestant has never annoyed me on the show as him !!!

Before I make a choice, I really need to understand what the OP means by "most terrible". In what way - worst dancer, most annoying??

Also, my definition of a 'joke contestant' differs wildly from the OP's. I think the joke contestant unintentionally started in Series 5 with Kate Garraway. She was clearly not hired to be such but, due to her sheer awfulness, it kind of evolved. And she happened to be with Anton who did everything to encourage her ...

The producers then hit upon something with Anton, foisting a succession of senior or overweight ladies who had zero chance of winning on him. The 'joke contestant' was well and truly born.

My joke contestant list would have read thus:

Series 5
Kate Garraway

Series 6
John Seargeant

Series 7
Lynda Bellingham
Jo Wood

Series 8
Ann Widdecombe

Series 9
Edwina Currie
Nancy Dell'Olio
Russell Grant

Series 10
Richard Arnold
Lisa Riley

Series 11
Tony Jacklin
Vanessa Feltz
Julien McDonald
Dave Myers

Series 12
Tim Wonnacott
Alison Hammond

Series 13
None

Series 14
Tameka Empson

I wholeheartedly agree with all those who say Mark Benton should not be in this list. Yes, he is overweight but he was quite a decent mover. After the advent of Kate Garraway, the joke contestant (in my eyes) is one who was hired to purely provide a comedy element to this entertainment show. That is to say, they could never win on their perceived dance ability but would be there to provide the laughs by ultimately & willingly embarrassing themselves.

The archetypal joke contestant became Ann Widdecombe. Like a few others, I actually liked her in the show because she threw herself into exactly what she was hired to do. All those bemoaning her zero attempt to learn to dance need to understand that that was never her motivation nor the producers reason for her signing up. I don't like her as a woman but it cannot be denied that she did tick that box and played it to the hilt.

Many here are naming people as 'joke contestants' in hindsight and for the wrong reasons. Craig Kelly, for example, wasn't hired as a joke contestant...he just became an arrogant big-head who thought he was better than he actually was. Quentin Wilson got THE lowest score in Strictly history with 8 so he turned out to be perhaps the worst dancer ever even though I don't believe he was hired to be the joke in Series 2. To be a true' joke contestant', it needs to be seen from the outset that that is exactly why that celebrity is being hired.

It's a bit better than that - I think it was actually 8 - but that's still an average of 2 from each judge in the days when Len and Bruno actually used paddles under 5.
