So while I'm willing to still give him time, I think it's time I crawl out of the wood work as I recently caught up on the last fortnights worth of episode and frankly I wish I hadn't bothered.
I will say this now, I was a fan of DTC. His era wasn't always perfect but he did a great deal to continue to mend the damage left in the wake of Kirkwood's dismissal, he introduced a wave of great new characters, gave new life to those who had been forgotten about or destroyed by his two predecessors and brought us some truly memorable storylines. It wasn't always plain sailing but overall, he did a good job. I'm even willing to forgive him for Peggy's fanw*nky exit as it was unwatchable, just a little cringeworthy at points. Her actual death though was handled quite well and the aftermath was interesting to watch as McFadden really brought his A game!
When SOC started I was initially put on the backfoot by the axing of Ronnie and Roxy, one half of which has been one of my favourite characters since day one. I can agree that perhaps they needed a break and if he does indeed let them live, I probably won't grumble too much. But killing off either sister when we won't see how the other handles it, cause lets face it they love one another more than anyone else (bar Ronnie/Matthew maybe) so having one die and the other leave is pointless (killing off both is worse still). While they may need a break, ultimately a good writer can get the best out of the characters as Rita Simons has proved in the last year what a capable actor she can be - right now, she's the one highlight of an otherwise uneventful fortnight.
Right now, there are lots of little things going on but nothing seems to really be happening. In soap there are several strands of story going on at once but there is usually one (sometimes two) stories at the forefront. Currently there seems to be no A plot. As the peak of R&R will be NY, currently they'd be a B plot. The same could be said about Lee but if he was a more interesting character, it has the potential to be an A plot but personally I just can't warm to him. Phil's illness again hasn't reached a head yet so is currently a B plot strand. Then the exits of Masood, Belinda and Kyle have served a low B, high C plots. The community plots that serve no real purpose such as the darts and the community theatre are background C or D strands. Even with big hitters such as Phil and R&R in the midst of a storyline, neither story is currently in the A plot bracket.
His saving grace has been Billy who has been given a completely new lease of life and I'm currently always watching keenly when he's on screen which is something I don't think I've ever said. Perry Fenwick has always shown himself to be a very capable actor, his role in Jase's death and the Little Mo/Trevor storyline is a testement to that so I'm glad he's being given something new to work with.
In general, some of his characterizations have been good. While I find the am dram story cringeworthy, I'm liking Kathy, Derek, Abi and Patrick (what a random bunch!) and I'd disagree with the comment about Stacey, the Fowler family unit is a solid one but SOC is only building on DTC's good work there. Stacey has mellowed alot since her return so this is nothing new and we've seen how great Stacey and Martin have been since DTC brought them together.
Currently though, SOC's biggest crime is the horrendous camera work, the overbearing incidental music and the utterly bemusing DUFF DUFF moments.
All in all, it's not Kirkwood bad but it's a far cry from DTC's best work. That may come, I hope it does but I can't pretend I'm not concerned. Right now, it looks like the show is heading for it's darkest day yet!
