Well Im a bit surprised at this thread, I love Kirk Douglas, cant take my eyes off him in his flms, even the rubbish ones. I read that he did an awful lot for other actors and writers, went agains the grain with all the communist rubbish from the government at the time and stood up for people.
I thought he did a lot for charity?
I have read that he was not a faithful husband, is that what people are talking about? I think he's also said that he might have been a bit more connected to his sons when they were growing up to avoid the problems they had in later life.

What are the rumours about him then?

There are rumours that he raped a late teenage actress and former child star who died in tragic circumstances in 1981.

I doubt that very much because I watched a documentary on her only last week which said that at just 17, she was having an affair with the director of her first big film as an adult actress, as well as one of her co stars.

She was a great favourite of mine, but I wasn't surprised to hear that she was sexually active from quite a young age. So if she did have an encounter with Kirk, it seems unlikely that she was quite as innocent as her sister likes to make out

Thank you so much, that is nice to hear after the recent negativity in here.

I am even more active in the Movies section, where I try and share my knowledge of more than 70 years of Movie going. .

An updated article on Kirk's birthday

As a fan of Lauren Bacall I'd also like to flag up that her and Kirk where very close friends and she attended a select ceremony of friends in 1999 in LA when I think he renewed his wedding vows or something?

He also gave a brilliant tribute when she died in 2014

Thanks for that Hilda, I never knew about his tribute to Bacall when she died. But I did know that she gave him an overcoat when he was cold and broke, and that she recommended him to Hal Wallis who gave him his first break with Paramount Pictures.

You will never miss any movie news if you check our other thread regularly. Even I haven't heard of some of some of the names who's deaths are mentioned in there.

The thread was created by Hilda 2.1/2 years ago, and we have had over 140.000 views.

Happy Birthday Kirk Douglas. What a milestone.

Loved him as Ned Land in Walt Disney's '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea' with such greats as James Mason, Paul Lukas and Peter Lorre. One of my favourite films as a kid.

I also met Barbara Stanwyck, and Deborah Kerr, and have photo's taken with them both. I have spoken to Joan Fontaine, Bette Davis, Rosalind Russell, Gloria Swanson, Jean Kent, Directors Frank Capra and William Wellman. Over the past 60 years here are some other stars that I have seen in the flesh, Tyrone Power, Vivien Leigh, Noel Coward, Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Anne Baxter, William Holden, Robert Wagner, Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Margaret Lockwood, Anna Neagle, Margaret Leighton, Alec Guinness, Burt Lancaster, Charles Laughton, Albert Finney, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Lena Horne, Ethel Merman, Olivia de Havilland, Richard Todd, Christopher Plummer, Bette Midler, Joan Collins, and Tony Newley, and those are just the first that come to mind, there are many more who you may not have heard of.

Bacall and Douglas were friends at drama school. She helped get him his first film role.

On the Super Chief to New York to scout new talent, [producer Hal B.] Wallis ran into Humphrey Bogart and wife Lauren Bacall, who recommended that Wallis check out a play that featured a friend of hers - Kirk Douglas. Wallis saw the play, knew a star when he saw one, and wasted no time in bringing Douglas to Hollywood. Wallis later wrote, "I knew I was taking a risk putting a newcomer against that powerhouse, Stanwyck, but she was extraordinarily considerate and played unselfishly with him in every scene."

Douglas remembered it a bit differently. He wrote of Stanwyck in his memoir: "The crew adored her. They called her 'Missy,' and when she came on the set she went around hugging them, asking about their wives and children by name. But she was indifferent to me. Crew members need attention, but who needs help more than somebody working on his first picture? Several weeks later she noticed me. I could see it happening, like the lens of a camera turning into focus. She looked at me, made eye contact for the first time. She said, 'Hey, you're pretty good.' I said, 'Too late, Miss Stanwyck.' I don't think she knew what I meant. But after that, we became friends."

I will be 80 in May, but I am not your average OAP, I am training for my third London Marathon in four years, and hold the record in the South East for being able to Plank for 12 minutes.

You can read about me if you Google "Ray to run his third London Marathon - Kent Online"

It's a terrific film, and is available from Amazon.co.uk, and you can also see the complete film on YouTube.

Many allegations made against him over the years. Believe he's a nasty piece of work and has many injunctions etc so save his sorry arse whilst he's still alive. Not many old time actresses will mourn his passing. It'll all come out in the wash, watch this space.

Just because she slept with her first director doesn't mean she consented with Kirk - though it probably does explain why he felt he could brutally rape her and get away with it.

I believe she was permanently damaged by him and it is reasonably well documented that she panicked whenever they were in same room subsequently.

I for one will not mourn his passing and hope that he is remembered in his true light.

I don't know what the truth is on the rumours, but wiith respect, isn't that the sort of defence that was once common in rape trials: 'please consider the lady's evidence in the light that by her former conduct she is clearly no angel herself'.

I imagine you've lost count of the FMs who've said you must write a book!

I have a feeling I'm going to add "hunt Walter down & spend a day listening to him tell me his life story" to my bucket list.
I couldn't care less if this sounds 'crawly' I am in awe of you, even at 80 years old, you're living life to the absolute maximum.
Your family must be amazingly proud of you.
