Skype on iPhone question

So let's say I'm signed into Skype, if I click the home button and leave it in the background, am I still showing as online to people? And can they call me?

Reason I'm asking is because when I hit the home button and go off it, then go back to it, it says "connecting", "connected", then "updating convosations", so I'm guessing it's like I'm signing out as soon as I hit the home button? And would it be the same if Skype was on the screen and I locked the phone?

Thanks in advance

Ok thanks for that at least I know now

Out of interest why not just sign out whenever you don't want calls and messages? You wouldn't be disturbed then.
