I know everyone's in love with Saara already but I think she deserves a round of applause for being one of the few non-British national acts that the public has embraced and taken seriously but also the longest surviving openly LGBT+ contestant that the show has ever had.

I might be wrong, but I don't think he mentioned it until after the show.

I feel like the show has really acknowledged it with Saara either though, not that I can remember.

No, his boyfriend was on the show at one point in the later weeks, so he is actually the longest surviving openly LGBT+ contestant. But I get what you mean. Saara has been a lot more open about it than Marcus was on the show. Not that he hid it a-such, but Saara actually talks about her partner, whereas it was a bit almost like he didn't exist when it came to Marcus.

Yes, who can forget Marcus dedicating a quite inappropriate love song to his mother rather than to his partner in the grand final. Cringeworthy!

What position did Rylan finish, fifth?

It's been won by two gay men, but neither one was out at the time, although Will Young came out a day after the final.

Will Young was never in the X Factor.

Well presumably we are making a point that it is possible for someone to be LBGT and do well on the show. Other people haven't felt comfortable coming out until after the show.

I think you are missing the point. Unless of course you think that the X Factor audience is 100% non-homophobic.

What a ridiculous thread. There's absolutely no connection between show longevity and sexual preference. There's no evidence to suggest the show has a history of being homophobic. The LGBT community have been represented over the years via contestants, hosts and judges.

it really is not a ridiculous thread and no one's calling the show homophobic but there's no denying that as the years have gone by people at home have become more accepting.

Some people are so sensitive on this forum. Why does any talk of homosexuality get the cliched "does it matter?" responses? Talking about LGBT isn't taboo anymore!

The Larries would disagree with you there. They think Cowell is the most homophobic person on the planet lol.

In all honestly i'm surprised that someone from elsewhere in Europe has made the top 4 in post-Brexit Britain.
